As a Chemist II in PPG's Optical Monomers and Coatings business, you will support Research and Development activities and front-end innovation of new OMC products through small molecule and polymer synthesis and lens casting. You will drive new product development through hands-on laboratory experimentation that enables commercialization of optical materials; often by working directly with customers!
Key Responsibilities
  • The Chemist II will strive to ensure the safe execution of experiments based on protocols or tests plans. His / Her duties will be to maintain a lab notebook updated, with clear records of experiments data and relevant information.
  • The experiments will be conducted in a chemical laboratory, mainly preparing reactive mixtures utilizing polythiols, polyols, amines and isocyanates, polymerizing the reactive mixtures in convection ovens.
  • The mixtures will be casted into mold cavities which require safe handling. The casted materials are prepared by mixing in liquid phase, which involve weighing and dosage processes, degassing, filtration and multiple transfers to different containers.
  • The formulation work must be detailed and with flawless record keeping. The parts produced will be tested following various physical and chemical properties tests methods; interaction with the analytical department will be needed.
  • As part of the polymerization process, convection ovens and monitoring instrumentation must be programmed and synchronized. The experimental setups involve manipulation of glassware and enclosures of different materials, mounting instrumentation for real-time measurements and special installations to provide the required conditions by the experiment design; skill with mechanical tools, and good dexterity is required.
  • Good memory, taking notes constantly during discussions and interaction with chemists and engineers, time management and multi-tasking are abilities, conducts and habits encouraged from the Chemist.

  • Undergraduate degree in chemistry or chemical engineering preferably, or a science related degree.
  • A passion for innovation.
