The Hardware / Controls Engineer is a pivotal position to lead the field deployment of BACs AI / Machine learning technology into the HVAC market. This position serves as the primary contact for hardware and controls integration to ensure successful system start-up and commissioning services when provided directly by BAC. They provide a high level of technical expertise to design the hardware and ensure that the products they are responsible for work properly and meet the customers needs and expectations. This person will also provide training for the site and customer on the basic functionality of the BAC equipment and how it interfaces with the other parts of the system when included in the service agreement. This role will be fully committed to managing client expectations and the successful individual will be required to satisfy external customers requirements and schedules while working with a high degree of independence.


  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or other technical degree with significant coursework in engineering or manufacturing principals is required. Significant electrical aptitude and knowledge of acceptable practices, techniques, and codes required.
  • Experience with analog and digital Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA), and control system logic design.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting HVAC controls, drives, and electronic components, as well as PLC & VFD programming
  • Familiarity with analog, BACnet, and Modbus communication protocols, and BAS from major vendors such as Siemens, Schneider, Honeywell, and JCI; Experience with Tridium and/ or J2 Innovation products a plus
  • Experience working with HVAC electrical systems and components from 5VDC to 600VAC
  • 5+ years of experience with commercial/industrial HVAC/R or commercial/industrial refrigeration equipment is strongly preferred.
  • Quality orientation and high attention to detail, strong customer service focus (internal and external customers)
  • Technical expertise must be complemented by self-motivation, relationship building skills, effective communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information in laymans terms, and the ability to effectively work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have a strong technical writing background and be able to write thorough protocols and summary reports to ensure complete understanding and handoff to the customer. Demonstrated strength in project management, organization and planning.
  • Lead the design for hardware (sensors, controller and other electronic equipment for BACs IoT system) that integrates with customer Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS).
  • Lead on-site installation, validation and commissioning of hardware, sensors, and controls systems (BACs and other third partys systems). They will be able to perform hands-on on-site troubleshooting, service and repairs, and provide on-site training to customers.
  • Review and make recommendations on design criteria, specifications, drawings, submittals, and other documentation pertinent to commissioning. Manage interactions with customers and ensure their needs are being met and equipment is working to its specification.
  • Provides feedback and input to BACs software engineers to drive improvements and ease of installation of BACs technology suite.
  • Direct pre-commissioning process with customers to facilitate successful equipment installation and avoid issues before startup
  • Ensure customer satisfaction through quick follow-up to problems/customer concerns, good root cause analysis, & complete feedback.
  • Manage the planning and execution of field tests and commissioning with the customer and Sales team.
  • Verify the system installation and functional performance are per standards, industry best practices, and the contract documents
  • Lead the resolution of complex operational and performance concerns raised from field service or customer inquiries, managing across internal departments as appropriate
  • Carry out application site visits, to familiarize Contractors on all aspects of the system to be installed
  • Drive collaboration across departments to resolve complex problems in an efficient and timely manner
  • Document commissioning activities, and communicate relevant findings to the internal Sales, Quality, and Engineering organizations

The Hardware / Controls Engineer reports to the Business Development Leader - IoT. This role will have interactions with all areas and levels within the organization, as well as customers and suppliers. This role does not currently have direct reports.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk up to 50% of the time. Working conditions include those of a normal construction environment, as well as standard hazards associated with installed HVAC equipment and rotating equipment. This position requires occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs, and travel of >50% of the time domestically with the potential for international travel.
