Job Title: Development Engineer I

Reports To: Manager Materials Development, Development Engineering

Job Status: Exempt

Basic Job Functions:

  • Develop new, innovative polymer material constructions for use with advanced solar module designs

  • Perform innovative material and process research to enhance thin-film solar module performance and durability

  • Evaluate novel materials and device designs in both laboratory and manufacturing environments

  • Screen new materials for cost reduction and manufacturability improvements

  • Comply with the companys Environmental, Quality, and Safety policies


  • 1+ years experience in innovative product development or R&D environment involving polymer materials selection or modification

  • 3+ years experience in a technical field involving polymer materials is preferred

  • Experience in the development or manufacturing of silicone adhesives is strongly preferred


  • BS in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or a similar technical discipline, with 3+ years of related technical work experience

  • MS in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science or similar technical discipline, with 1+ years of related technical work experience

Required Skills/Competencies:

  • Strong background with the development and/or manufacturing of adhesives, specifically structural silicones

  • Capable of leading projects to develop custom adhesives, sealants, films, coatings, composites, and other materials for use with next-generation solar modules

  • Hands-on experience in materials characterization, electronic measurements, and failure analysis

  • Familiar with statistical data analysis and experimental design

  • Familiar with basic semiconductor device physics fundamentals and device characterization is preferred but not required

  • Good communication skills. Can produce clear data, presentations, and reports, as well as oral presentations.

  • Good interpersonal skills, including working with cross-functional teams. Other behaviors include integrative thinking, results-oriented, self-awareness, mentor others, and willing to make changes

  • Strong sense of project ownership with hands-on and can-do attitude

  • Comfortable working with vendors and other external partners, including international travel

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Engages with 3rd party institutions and vendors to identify polymeric materials suitable for PV module applications in terms of cost, performance, durability, and manufacturability

  • Define and execute experiments, including cross-functional experimental planning

  • Drive projects to improve solar module packaging

  • Analyze and interpret data with regard to adhesion, moisture permeability, electrical leakage, corrosion, fracture and rheological behaviors

  • Identify opportunities for improvement and innovation in solar cell efficiency, material selection, and process design

  • Ensure adherence to all Safety Procedures and Housekeeping standards

  • Other duties as assigned

  • This position will report to the Manager of Materials Development


  • 5 -10% travel required

  • Will sit, stand, or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift

  • Will climb stairs on an occasional basis

  • Will lift, push, or pull up to 27 pounds on an occasional basis

  • Required to use hands to grasp, lift, handle, carry or feel objects on a frequent basis

  • 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required

  • Must be able to comply with all safety standards and procedures

  • May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis

  • May stoop, kneel, or bend, on an occasional basis

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to; steel-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective jacket or apron, and arm guards)

  • All associates working on the production floor may be required to wear a respirator at any given time and thus, the ability to wear a respirator is a condition of employment and continued employment (requires little or no facial hair)
