WTKR/WGNT, Scripps' CBS and CW duopoly in Norfolk, Virginia is recruiting for a Digital Reporter to join its dynamic team. The Digital Reporter will utilize digital storytelling methods to deliver comprehensive news reports. Distributes online content and breaking news to a variety of digital platforms.


  • Under general direction, develops sources, gathers information and writes news and feature articles that are accurate, informative, balanced and entertaining. Produces material - often investigative or long-form journalism - in a manner that meets the highest journalistic standards.

  • Experienced contributor responsible for a significant coverage area. Delivers complex assignments with minimal direction and trusted to operate with considerable latitude.

  • Consults frequently with editors on stories. Stays on top of developing and continuing stories.

  • Identifies and develops news, feature and enterprise stories of interest relevant to the lives of our users, a detailed understanding of the community and stories published, while also monitoring competing media (newspapers, online, radio and television) to ensure the location maintains a competitive advantage.

  • Develops a network of formal and informal sources throughout the community to help develop and write stories as well as providing background information.

  • Take photographs or shoot video (or a combination thereof) as necessary to tell the story or as assigned by a supervising editor. Capable of using a camera equipped with still and video capabilities.

  • Is on alert at all times for breaking news and stay abreast of local news developments, to generate story ideas and plan coverage effectively.

  • Strive to maintain diversity of coverage, to give voice to all aspects of the community, not necessarily the most vocal or most prominent.

  • Enhance digital news content by suggesting or creating images, video, graphics, outside links, maps, and interactive elements

  • Engages readers through social media, responding to reader comments and pursuing other avenues for interacting with audiences.

  • Monitors other news Web sites and TV/radio broadcasts as well as phones, e-mail and social networking accounts (e. g. Twitter, Facebook) to ensure the most comprehensive, competitive coverage.

  • Actively participates with newsroom leadership to align work and organizational resources with strategic goals. Involved in short and long-term content planning.

  • Attends job-related training as necessary, keeping up-to-date with metrics, progress and new initiatives.

  • Works with other Scripps employees with similar job responsibilities/titles to share content, ideas, systems, work flows and best practices seamlessly.

  • Maintains positive working relationships with teams in all areas of the newsroom.

  • Ensures fairness in coverage, sensitivity to community expectations and balanced content.

  • Meets established deadlines.

  • Inspire people and encourage teamwork; being open-minded and flexible to new thinking.

  • Perform other duties as needed and directed


  • At least 2-5 years experience in designated field.

  • Bachelors Degree preferably in Journalism or equivalent professional experience.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required. In addition, proof of insurance and liability coverage may be required.


  • Demonstrates an in-depth working knowledge of the theories and applications of professional journalism and a basic command of the English language to include the ability to spell correctly, write clearly and exercise proper use of grammar.

  • Working knowledge of multimedia journalism, e. g. reporting, writing, web posting, still photography, online video, databases and social media.

  • Demonstrates effective and diplomatic oral and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of libel laws as well as state and federal laws regarding open meetings, open records and access to information, sufficient to direct quality editorial coverage and make legally-sound decisions on publication of content.

  • Versed in the fundamentals of news reporting, including issues involving privacy, libel, access and ethics. Exhibits high standards of accuracy and fairness.

  • Outstanding editing and writing skills; demonstrates attention to detail in both word editing and writing for publication. Strong working knowledge of Associated Press style.

  • Able to use digital, video, mapping, social networking and other technology to bolster news reports.

  • Self-starter and multi-tasker, capable of demonstrating outstanding news judgment with minimal supervision. Demonstrates skill in time management and setting priorities.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), web publishing tools and HTML.

  • Understanding of how to interact with audiences across platforms and to formulate multi-platform strategies that drive new audience and maximize existing audience.

  • Openness and capacity to seek new opportunities and adopt new ways of doing things.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Ability to function as a team player.
