The Center of External Innovation is responsible for establishing partnerships to support Takeda Research and Development by driving external engagement on opportunities ranging from academic research collaborations to acquiring late-stage clinical assets. Within CEI, Oncology Business Development is a matrixed team consisting of Business Development, Search and Evaluation, and Project Management leads who collaborate with the Oncology Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) and Therapeutic Area Unit (TAU) to (1) develop a BD strategy consistent with DDU and TAU priorities, (2) identify and triage opportunities consistent with the agreed strategy, (3) lead cross-functional due diligence teams to assess program acquisition, in-licensing and asset externalization opportunities across the R&D pipeline and commercial product portfolio and (4) lead and drive the negotiation team to execute on these varied, high visibility transactions. CEI is seeking a highly experienced business development transaction professional to join the Oncology Business Development team and contribute to this critical function within Takeda R&D.


  • Lead complex term sheet and contract negotiations across a broad range of transactions, including in-licensing, out-licensing, co-promotions and profit shares, academic collaborations and other discovery and clinical stage agreements
  • Collaborate with Search and Evaluation and Project Management leads and Takedas internal ventures team to finalize in-house technical evaluation and due diligence recommendations on assigned business development opportunities
  • Collaborate with multiple functions within Takeda, including oncology discovery and development leadership, business law, intellectual property counsel, tax, R&D finance, technical accounting and alliance management to formulate deal proposals for senior management review
  • Prepare and present fully integrated proposals for business development opportunities to senior management
  • Support Takeda Global Business Development in M&A and commercial asset collaborations
  • Mentor junior transaction professionals and other junior colleagues in CEI
  • Act as a thought leader within CEI to expand enterprise-wide capabilities, processes and knowledge of industry trends
  • Continue to build a broad network of relationships with potential licensors worldwide
  • Articulate Takeda's licensing goals and practices in public forums, such as partnering meetings, speaking engagements, etc.
  • Be an effective ambassador for CEI brand to ensure Takeda is perceived as a Partner of Choice with external organizations


  • Over ten years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry with prior background in business development or related experience required, including pharmaceutical/biotech R&D, pharmaceutical/biotech equity analysis, management consulting, venture capital, or investment banking
  • A track record of success in driving significant and complex business development opportunities to completion in the discovery, clinical and commercial arenas; proven ability to drive and execute on multiple deals simultaneously
  • Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree is preferred; a Masters degree in a relevant scientific discipline plus over ten years relevant professional experience is acceptable
  • Demonstrated clinical, biological/pharmacological research, or professional experience in a specialty therapeutic area is required
  • Experience leading teams and influencing cross-functional groups, including members of senior leadership
  • Deep understanding of the drug discovery, development, regulatory approval, and commercialization processes
  • Demonstrated scientific knowledge and gravitas to help drive internal BD strategy and hold/drive meaningful discussions externally with Pharma/Biotech executives and key opinion leaders
  • A well-established business development network within the Oncology industry is strongly preferred along with a progressive knowledge of innovative alliance structures, industry trends and competitive issues related to pharmaceutical business development
  • Creative, results oriented self-starter with the ability to deliver high quality deliverables on time that are appropriate for review by senior management
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to be effective in a matrix environment


  • Willingness to travel to various meetings or client sites, including overnight trips. Some international travel may be required.
  • Requires approximately 10-15% travel
