Role Summary:
The Director, Experience Design (XD) will apply their extensive knowledge of experience design and UX to meaningfully improve the experiences our employees and customers have with Best Buy. This role is an advocate for employees and customers, a creative problem solver, and an impactful leader who must function collaboratively across teams and disciplines to influence with and without authority.

The Director of Experience Design leads a multi-disciplinary team of Experience Designers and works in partnership with product management and engineering as part of the Retail Technology product portfolio, as well as with other product and stakeholder teams across the organization. This role is responsible for the evolution, direction and creation of the Retail Store employee and customer experience and ensures it hangs together beautifully within a complete Omnichannel experience.

This role will have multi-disciplinary accountability within UX/Experience design including: visual design, copywriting, and information architecture. A mature and balanced understanding of strategy, usability, interaction design, information architecture, and visual design is a must. In addition, this role will help individuals and teams across the enterprise understand and embrace Human-Centered Design (HCD.) This includes having a strategic understanding and vision of the short and long-term business, brand, technical/operational, customer and employee needs. Finally, this leader will be accountable for all recruiting, hiring, and staff management needs within their Experience Design team.


1. Lead team of experience designers focused on digital product capabilities

  • Lead a multi-faceted team of designers, UX architects and writers, focused on defining and delivering new experiences and incremental improvement to existing experiences through product design
  • Recruit, develop and retain world-class talent including coaching, mentorship, recognition as well as leading and providing oversight on projects
  • Create opportunities for training and collaborative learning to enable team members personalized development plans
  • Lead work through the team, including prioritization, guidance, support and resource planning

2. Be a leader within the greater Best Buy Experience Design practice and meaningfully contribute to defining, evangelizing and advancing the practice within the Customer Office and the Best Buy
  • Demonstrate expertise in the core HCD Competencies: Research, Strategy, & Design
  • Partner with leaders of Experience Design teams across the Customer Office to co-lead Best Buys Experience Design community of practice
  • Provide mentoring and advisory perspectives across the broader team to ensure human-centered design work is embraced throughout the organization
3. Ensure efficient and effective processes to deliver experience design work
  • Develop and implement the approach and processes needed to deliver Best Buy Retail Store product experiences
  • Efficiently and effectively push work forward while ensuring the work centers on solving the needs and opportunities for our employees and customers
  • Define and implement the framework needed to coordinate design efforts across multiple product teams or projects as needed to create a seamless Omnichannel experience
  • Ensure successful execution of the design work
  • Effectively communicate the strategic direction of the work as well as the final output to leaders across the company
  • 8+ years in UX related role (e.g., Strategic Designer, Interaction Designer, Information Architect, Visual Designer, Product Desinger, etc.).
  • 8+ years of direct experience leading a UX/experience design team, or design/IA/copywriter team
  • Demonstrated experience in discovering, defining and delivering end-to-end, multichannel customer or employee experiences
  • Extensive portfolio of work that demonstrates advanced knowledge and skill in experience design
  • Proven ability to build collaborative relationships at all levels and ensuring teams employ a collaborative culture
  • Understands the potential application of new technologies and how customer and employee experiences could benefit from them
  • Ability to work in ambiguity and break-down ambiguity into actionable items
