Job Description

Director-Model Quality Assurance and Governance

Financial Model Development (FMD) has an exciting opportunity for a senior role in the centralized Financial Model Development team in the 1st Line of Defense. This role reports to the Head of FMD. The Director will be responsible for model development quality assurance, model performance monitoring, model documentation review, project reporting and issue management for Finance model inventory as well as Exam and Internal Audit engagement management. The individual will be instrumental in leading and championing good model Governance as aligned to SR 11-7 and SR 15-19. The person must be an influential leader and a strong risk manager with solid risk management skills and experience in at least one of the following areas: Model Risk, Operational Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit, Regulatory Bank Supervision. This position will require organizing and planning model risk management related activities across various finance modeling teams and centralized FMD team. The candidate will have to work with 1st LOD Model Governance and 2nd LOD MRM functions on reporting, scheduling and project management


  • Conduct Quality assurance model development document and technical documents prior to submission to model validation. Responsible for assessing model risks and limitations and provide recommendations and conclusions with respect to model quality assurance review reports and verbal communication.
  • Help develop Financial Model Performance Monitoring Program for all Finance Models and work with Model Owners to implement Model Performance Monitoring Program
  • Manage the model governance to support model policy, reporting and governance standards. Drive the execution of model governance activities including activities covered by Model Risk Policy, Frameworks, Exception Framework and Change Management.
  • Drive operational efficiency through process improvements or automation (i.e., tracking model risk metrics, issues, back test exception, model performance issues, model errors, internal audit findings and any issues raised by regulators, managing incidents and risk & control issues.
  • Provide reporting and progress updates regarding the progress and status of model development, issues remediation, and results of ongoing model monitoring. Build out reporting to executive leadership, key governance committees, and the Board as needed.
  • Provide leadership across finance on model development, documentation, and model governance related activities. Be prepared to be a "Player Coach" Manager.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of the latest developments in relation to regulatory guidance and industry practices.
  • Maintain model inventory, and key model information to support Financial Model Development team and Finance model stakeholders. Identify and propose changes to enhance current model risk management standards and controls. Roll out enhance Inventory and Model Attestation process.
  • Manage Regulatory and Internal Audit Examination process as well as deliverables and interactions

  • 9+ years of Model Risk Management, model validation, model governance and oversight and/or quantitative analysis experience, or applicable operational risk experience preferably within Financial Services
  • 1st and/or 2nd LOD experience in model risk management within a large financial institution focused on assessing model risks and controls, with a demonstrated background in applying risk & controls, as well as non-financial risk management principles
  • CCAR Model Governance experience preferred
  • Proven problem solver with ability to provide in-depth analysis of complex problems, manage risk and make quick decisions
  • Model Inventory and Governance Process Management or Familiarity
  • Policy, Framework and Procedure development and process rollout at a complex organization
  • Proven track record with client relationships in influence and gaining consensus
  • Independent and highly motivated individual
  • Familiar with FRB's Supervisory Guidance on MRM SR11-7 and 15-18
  • Proven track record of strong model risk management capabilities (framework development, validation testing and process management etc.).
  • You have prior experience in Model Validation, Model control testing, Sarbanes Oxley/audit testing and/or Model Governance
  • Ability to manage multiple reviews simultaneously with strong attention to detail, but ability to prioritize and escalate as appropriate
  • Experience with creating presentations and presenting to Senior Leaders and Regulatory Agencies. Expert in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint and Excel).
  • Experience as an excellent people manager; experience leading teams and building team skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and partnership skills and the ability to positively influence outcomes, particularly in difficult situations.
  • Willingness to continue learning and to research and interpret laws and regulations.
  • Strong sense of accountability and work ethic
  • Effective project and time management skills.
  • Able to lead discussions and implement processes at various levels of an organization hierarchy.

  • Ability to leverage historic experience as well as think outside of the box
  • Collaborative with business partners with ability to manage and influence relationships that are widely dispersed both functionally and geographically

  • Extensive large-scale project or program management experience with the proven ability to develop action plans and drive a diverse group of stakeholders to achieve milestones and deadlines.

  • Pragmatic problem-solver, forward thinker with knowledge of broader financial business models and operating risks.
  • Proven track record of strategic thinking and tactical planning for developing multiple approaches to solve issues and make recommendation to senior leadership.
