Job Description

Responsible for leading scientific evaluation and post-deal execution of Takeda Neuroscience external discovery engine partnerships. Takeda has invested deeply in productive external discovery collaborations with biotech and academia, which have contributed substantially to the overall pipeline of pre-clinical and clinical stage assets, and which have allowed Takeda to rapidly access emerging areas of clinically validated non-small molecule medicine approaches as well as expand expertise to powerful novel small molecule mechanisms of action outside traditional concepts of small molecule target classes. Director, External Neuroscience Innovation, works closely in concert with discovery, translational medicine, clinical sciences, alliance management, as well as matrixed functional experts, to oversee scientific execution of external discovery platform research plans, responsible for overall success of the collaboration as internal discovery project lead, progression through internal Takeda governance, and transition to development teams for progression into the clinic. Additionally, a key function of the Director, Pharmacology/External Neuroscience Innovation, will be to work under the guidance of Neuroscience discovery leadership and strategic stakeholders, and in close conjunction with Takeda Business Development, to identify, evaluate, participate in the diligence of, and prepare for governance review of incoming potential external discovery opportunities.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Guided by the Neuroscience Therapeutic Area strategy, contributes to strategy for external neuroscience research in diseases of the central nervous system and neuromuscular axis.
  • Identifies, evaluates new opportunities in neurological diseases within Business Development evaluation framework for in-licensing and collaboration
  • Post-deal execution, acts as internal Takeda discovery project lead to ensure scientific quality in prosecution of discovery collaborations with Biotechs and/or academia in neurological diseases, leading project from post-deal execution to Candidate Selection.
  • Acts as pharmacology expert in aspects of emerging mechanisms of small molecule pharmacology within expertise which may be, for example, bifunctional targeted protein degradation small molecule pharmacology, RNA splicing modulators, RNA biology modulation or other emerging mechanisms of small molecule modulation relevant to neurologic disease biology
  • Identifies, engages, and ensures the success of external research partnerships across Takedas global network and the external scientific community.
  • Keeps up-to-date with the latest scientific advancements (e.g. competitive situation, new technologies and partnerships) and is well informed about current regulatory (FDA etc.) requirements and trends.
  • Works with matrix team colleagues within the organization to ensure timely achievement of pipeline and technology goals
  • Develops talent within the Neuroscience Drug Discovery Unit, providing performance feedback and mentorship.
  • Implements initiatives and best practices to ensure an open and free scientific culture that is rich in diversity.
  • Collaborates with management to manage company operations, set company-wide policies and ensure compliance

DIMENSIONS AND ASPECTS

Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise

  • Well informed in all areas of drug discovery from target identification through preclinical research, including biomarker, and PK/PD/Tox assays.
  • Demonstrated expertise in rare and/or common degenerative neurological diseases, including diseases of the neuromuscular axis and central nervous system. Experience with peripheral neuropathies desirable but not required.

Leadership

  • Track record of accomplishment in research as evidenced by quality and quantity of publications and/or inventions and/or products and clinical candidates.
  • Track record of leading complex cross-functional collaborations
  • Demonstrated ability to organize the activities of scientific teams working in highly diverse scientific areas, including managing relationships with academic /biotech collaborators and CROs.

  • Independently manages workload and expectations
  • Scientifically independent and data driven
  • Scientific driver for research strategy that impacts group internally and outside area of function

Interaction

  • Works closely with Takeda Business Development to initiate and lead external interactions and collaborations
  • Frequent contact with internal and external personnel at various management levels across functional areas
  • Demonstrated track record of communication and collaboration with Key Opinion Leaders in areas of neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disease biology, through publications or consortia participation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation and organization of data for efficient presentation to any internal or external senior audience or partner.

Innovation

  • Demonstrated expertise in novel emerging small molecule pharmacology, for example small molecule RNA modulators, or small molecule inducers of protein degradation

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • Ph.D. in Life Science
  • 10 years Pharma or Biotech industry experience
  • 7 years of pipeline asset project work (HTS to Clinical Candidate) in in vitro and/or in vivo pharmacology work
  • At least 3 years of external facing scientific work, including but not limited to work with external discovery collaborators in Biotech or academia, CRO management, or BD search and evaluation work
