Division Chief - Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

Children's Hospital & Medical Center, with the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, is currently recruiting a Division Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM). The Division Chief provides overall clinical leadership for the practice of pediatric critical care. In addition to the administrative responsibilities of this position, the individual will share in the clinical responsibilities with the 14 current faculty members. The Chief will hold a faculty position at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. Candidates will be board certified in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, along with possessing strong clinical and leadership experience. The candidate would have a strong clinical background in both cardiac and non-cardiac critical care. The ideal candidate would have an interest to lead Clinical Research, experience and involvement with PALISI would be preferable, and would lead the development of our fellowship program. Candidates will have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. We seek individuals with strong emotional and social intelligence and a demonstrated ability to connect with others in a meaningful way at all levels of the organization and university. This leader is responsible in developing and implementing the clinical, educational, academic, research, and advocacy goals of the institution for Pediatric Critical Care. This individual will represent the Children's Hospital & Medical Center leadership at the University for matters involving Pediatric Critical Care at all campus sites. The division currently provides critical care services for:

  • An 18-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), with capacity to provide overflow to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). PCCM faculty support a busy cardiothoracic surgery program with three cardiothoracic surgeons, heart transplant program and a busy ECMO program.
  • The PICU currently has 9 beds with capacity to overflow into the CICU. PCCM faculty provide coverage for this multidisciplinary medical-surgical unit with a full complement of pediatric subspecialties.
  • The PCCM faculty also provide coverage for a 7-bed PICU at Nebraska Medicine, the clinical entity of the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). This unit specializes in the care of solid-organ transplant, bone-marrow transplant, neurosurgical and level 1 trauma patients, in additional to general medical patients.

The faculty is engaged in several areas of interest including Transport, Extra Corporeal Support, Palliative Care, and Simulation. The division is in the midst of applying for a fellowship program. The goal of the division chief will be to see this program to successfully launch and progress as per ACGME guidelines. The above intensive care units are provided coverage by residents from pediatric, medicine-pediatrics, emergency medicine and anesthesia. In addition, cardiology and pediatric anesthesia fellows rotate through the units. Additionally, there is a growing complement of Advanced Practice Providers who help support the clinical service in all three units.

The Child Health Research Institute provides start-up funding, gap funding and infrastructure for clinical, basic science, and translational research. Research interests are strongly desired and supported. This is a unique opportunity with unlimited potential to advance a strong clinical and academic career in Pediatric Critical Care.

This is the second time in a row to have accomplished this distinction.

Our new campus expansion plans include an additional 100+ beds to the existing 145, expansion to the Cardiac Care Unit including dedicated intensive care, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Fetal Care Center and Fetal Surgery, Short-Stay Observation Unit, Emergency Department, and Surgical Services. The expansion will also provide new facilities to support education and clinical and outcomes research.
