Work Hours/Shift:

Full Time Nights

You Will Be Responsible For:

Assists nurse with assigned patients

o Provides care to patients in accordance with standards of care:

Provides assistance with basic hygiene, comfort, and activities of daily living.

o Reports change of condition changes, potential problems or concerns involving the patient or family to the nurse (i.e. vital signs, Intake/Output).

o Interprets arrhythmias, documents and initiates treatment within the scope of practice in the ED

o Performs NIHSS initials and subsequent scoring of stroke patients.

o Begins initial gathering of data of ambulance and/or patients transferred from triage

o Administers ACLS medications in a code situation under the supervision of the RN and per the approved hospital list

o Assists in maintaining patient skin integrity by:

Turning and repositioning patient according to policy.

Utilizing identified skin products according to Skin Protocol.

Notifies nurse if skin breakdown observed

o Performs urinary catheterization using sterile technique, to include specimen collection and documents

o Removes Urinary Catheters and documents.

o Reports observations to nurse

o Performs simple clean dressing changes and documents

o Performs accucheks, hemoccults, urine pregnancy, urinalysis, gastrocult per hospital procedure and documents

o Inserts Nasogastric tubes per hospital procedure and documents

o Discontinues Nasogastric tubes, disposes of in accordance with hospital Biohazardous waste policy.

o Inserts peripheral IV catheters per hospital procedure and documents

o Removes peripheral IV catheters, disposes of in accordance with hospital Biohazardous waste policy.

o Observes site and notifies nurse of condition.

Documents on patient record

o Performs proper application of splints and Bucks traction

o Performs unit based phlebotomy for patient lab tests and documents

o Empties foley bags, JPs, and hemovacs.

o Documents patient care according to policy:

o Intake and Output

o Vital Signs

o Weights

o Activities of Daily Living (ADL)

o Specimen Collection

o Takes vital signs and measures Intake/Output

o Transports patients, medical records, and equipment to destinations within scheduled time frames, observing correct techniques

o Assists in positioning, lifting, and ambulating patients, using appropriate safety precautions and body mechanics

o Answers call lights in a timely manner.

o Communicates patient requests, problems or concerns to the nurse

o Weighs patients using correct procedure

o Collects specimens as assigned by nurse

o Follows hospital policy for patient identification when collecting specimens

Performs unit tasks supportive to patient care and operations of the department

o Distributes linen supplies

o Supports nutritional needs of the patient by:

Assisting with meal set-up.

Feeding patients within identified restrictions.

Notifies nurse if patient does not have adequate p.o. intake for meals or snacks, or if the patient is not following fluid restrictions.

o Performs unit errands and returns to the unit promptly when errand completed

o Prioritizes responsibilities and utilizes time effectively to accomplish duties in necessary timeframe

o Keeps nurse informed when leaving and upon returning to unit

o Conforms to patient care policy standard for dress code expectations

Maintains a safe environment for patients, co-workers, and visitors

Qualifications

What You Will Need:

  • Florida State Certification as a Paramedic
  • Current BCLS, ACLS, PALS
  • High school education or equivalent

Job Summary:

Perform specific tasks or routines supportive to delivery of patient care in the assigned nursing unit under the direction of a Registered Nurse in accordance with Division of Nursing standards.
