Summary

The Engineering Team Lead will oversee a small group of technical employees (engineers, manufacturing specialists, technicians) within the Site Engineering Team, which is responsible for daily plant support, new product development/scale-up, and the continuous improvement of processes that manufacture various Dentsply Sirona products. This role is directly responsible for supporting one of three business value streams with a high degree of technical competency. While safely complying to all regulatory (OSHA, FDA, GMP) requirements and ISO standards, this role will work with products across an extremely varied portfolio of batch-produced, chemically formulated products, including specialty organic chemicals, organic resins and adhesives, polymer materials, inorganic glasses, minerals, and composites, and pharmaceuticals.

For daily plant support , this role will lead their team to resolve plant problems and support the operations teams in order to meet key performance indicators (KPIs) for various safety, quality, delivery, inventory, cost and productivity metrics. This role and team will work closely with operations and maintenance in order to troubleshoot, implement process changes (equipment modifications), complete a plant trial or validation. Active presence on the manufacturing floor is expected as a part of plant support.

For new product development/scale-up , this role will interface with a wide variety of functions in order to meet goals associated with growing the value stream's brands or commercializing new products. As a technical subject matter expert, this role will be responsible for making immediate contributions and driving key decisions in the development, design, and technical transfer of new products. The ability to effectively communicate to a broader, non-technical audience (i.e. marketing, sales) is critical to the integration of this role within the global innovation process.

For continuous improvement, this role is responsible for identifying enhancements to existing products/processes within their value stream that will result in safer operations, business continuity, or cost savings. This may include identifying the opportunity, working with outside vendors to design/build/commission changes, and working with internal leaders to submit capital authorization requests for approval. Basic project management oversight and lean six sigma principles will be required.

As a team leader , the mentorship and development of their technical team is expected. Active leadership responsibilities will include completing annual performance reviews, creating professional development plans, and managing employee assignments within the overall Site Engineering Team's Hoshin-Kanri planning tool. This role will interface with the other Engineering Team Leads in order to coordinate activities with shared resources within the Site Engineering Team (i.e. packaging engineers, electrical/controls engineers, operational excellence specialists, project management leads and technicians), as well as to share best practices, improve overall engineering team performance, and to leverage various team skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Follow all site environmental, health, safety, quality guidelines and maintain compliance with OSHA, FDA, cGMP, and ISO regulations.
• Continuously evaluate equipment, process operations and controls to ensure personnel safety, environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance.
• Provides leadership and direction in the day to day decision making for the value stream so operations can to meet key performance metrics.
• Able to effectively lead optimization activities and ongoing process improvement initiatives, including projects for EH&S compliance, reliability, capacity, process consistency, quality and cost reduction.
• Develop expert knowledge of the manufacturing process, products and technology to ensure that equipment is performing to design specification.
• Participates in root cause investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to meet business and compliance requirements.
• Follow structured problem-solving techniques (DMAIC, PDCA, etc.) to effectively lead problem investigations and resolution.
• Initiate, develop and execute validation/qualification protocols to support business/operational initiatives including customer backorder minimization, cost reduction, non-conformance reduction, complaint reduction, yield/process reliability improvement.
• Develop Value Stream Maps to identify improvement opportunities for safety, quality, delivery, inventory, cost and productivity metrics.
• Apply a wide range of Lean, Six Sigma methods and tools.
• Technical project management for internal and external teams as it relates to changes or improvements within the value stream.
• Other duties as assigned (note: some travel may be required within this role, but typically < 10%).

Education and Experience

• Required: Position requires a minimum four-year degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with at least 5-10 years of experience in process development, scale up, plant support, and project management. Candidate must have prior experience managing direct reports.
• Preferred: Prior experience in a medical device, chemical or pharmaceutical industry. Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt with demonstrated successes. Additional experience or an advanced degree that focused on data analysis, statistics or business (i.e. an MBA).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong chemistry background with a focus on scale-up, pilot-scale manufacturing and process development
• Ability to analyze data with various statistical programs and prepare reports (i.e. Excel, Minitab)
• Good communication skills, both orally and written, at all levels of an organization
• Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
