ERM is seeking an Environmental Public Affairs/Communications Consultant to join our Pittsburgh (Cranberry Township) office. The ideal candidate will assist Project Managers and ultimately, serve as a Project Manager on a variety of Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Engagement (SCSE) projects to support clients in various sectors (oil & gas, power, manufacturing, technology, and more). This is an excellent opportunity for an early- to mid-career professional to join our growing and exciting consulting team.


  • Work with the internal ERM Strategic Communication and Stakeholder Engagement staff to develop, coordinate and implement broad scale public consultation programs (strategic and tactical) involving stakeholder outreach with landowners, general public, elected officials, media and advocacy groups at all levels.
  • Lead desktop monitoring & analysis of traditional and social media using traditional web browsers and licensed tools to identify trends and risks and offer analysis to support client objectives.
  • Plan and conduct virtual and on-the-ground outreach to engage identified stakeholders proactively, create awareness about major project milestones, respond to issues associated with projects, regulatory activity and public participation opportunities.
  • Write and edit project plans and informational materials e.g., fact sheets, website copy, newsletters, brochures, display copy, letters.
  • Participate in research activities including desktop environmental justice analyses and social risk assessments, as well as focus groups and community advisory groups (write moderator guides, moderate and develop summary documents).
  • Manage and coordinate logistics for project meetings (virtual or in person), including training, events, public meetings, open houses, among other activities.
  • Comply with appropriate project-specific health and safety plan requirements during the course of project work.
  • Prepare and manage project work plan documents, budgets and status reports.
  • Support and participate in business development plans to obtain new clients, relationship development through seminars and conventions, conduct industry outreach in support of client projects and business development efforts and assist in the development of new business proposals and contracts.
  • Manage and coordinate sub-contractor activity.


  • BS/BA degree, preferably in a communications field of study (Public Affairs, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, English, Political Science).
  • 5-10 years of public relations/public affairs experience, preferably in a public relations firm or similar setting.
  • Experience with planning and implementing public outreach programs and writing and producing informational materials.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software programs.
  • Professional demeanor, strong organizational skills with ability to multi-task, work independently and prioritize deadline-driven tasks.
  • Keen attention to detail with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Full time position, with a mix of at home and office setting work. Some travel required (approximately 4-6 weeks per year outside of the current COVID-19 restricted environment).
  • Social media/digital experience on all platforms.
  • Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop experience is desired but not required.
  • Spanish fluency desired but not required.
  • Local candidates preferred.
