JOB SUMMARY
The primary purpose of this position is to lead and manage the accounting, payroll, and student accounts departments. This position is responsible for the integrity of the University’s financials, safeguarding the University’s financial assets, providing accurate and timely financial information (e.g., audits, tax filings, grants, accounts payable, student accounts, etc.) to internal and external constituents, billing and collecting tuition, and leading and developing staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leads, supervises, and develops staff in a manner that inspires professionalism, strong inter- and intra-departmental communication, and team building.
- Responsible for leading and providing directions to the accounting and student accounts departments.

- Assist with recruitment, selection, and training of employees.
Responsible for accounting information.
- Prepare, review, and approve transactions in Workday ERP.
- Coordinate the external audits of the University’s financial statements.
- Prepare the federal and state nonprofit tax returns.
- Assist in accurately maintaining and reporting endowment activities and balances to ensure proper stewardship of all endowment funds. Assists in providing information on donors/grantors to ensure that gifts/grants are accurately recorded, classified, and spent according to grantors designations as needed.
- Monitor and maintain cash balances. Performs wire transfers, debt payments, and other wire and ACH transactions.
- Prepare quarterly financial statements in accordance with GAAP and FASB for internal and external use and distribution.
- Prepare compliance reporting, cash forecasting and quarterly debt covenant calculations and certifications.
- Monitor budget compliance to ensure adherence to accounting and financial procedures and assist in budget analysis and preparation as requested.
- Perform/oversee reconciliations.
- Prepare ad hoc reports.
Responsible for the accounting system (Workday).
- Maintain financial security in the Workday ERP system.
- Maintain financial system chart of accounts setup, account posting rules, and other configuration, including but not limited to suppliers, expenses, endowment, and banking.
- Acts as a resource to the student accounts manager and payroll manager on ERP setup and configuration.
Provide accurate and timely information to internal and external constituents on financial and other statistical data.
Establish and maintain appropriate operational policies, procedures, and processes.
Prepare and submit financial surveys.
Provide support on special projects and perform other duties as requested.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the: Vice President for Finance and Administration/Chief Financial Officer
This position supervises 6-10 employees.
This position does not supervise student workers.
BUDGET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is responsible for the following budget: Accounting department and Student Accounts department
Budget Range: $100,001-$500,000
Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of and experience in business management, with emphasis in general ledger, budgeting, accounts payable, information systems, GAAP and FASB
- Demonstrated success in providing leadership and supervision of staff and projects
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Ability to make timely decisions on accounting matters
- Effective in problem solving
- Expertise with web-based systems
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Word and Excel
- Ability to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences
- Able to handle sensitive and confidential information
- Able to work effectively with all levels of management, staff, and employees
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in accounting
- 5-7 years’ experience in accounting or finance
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Work experience in higher education or a nonprofit institution
- Experience with Workday ERP system
REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
- CPA certification (active or inactive)
WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT
- Duties are performed indoors in an office environment
- Must be able to work on a computer for extended periods of time
- Ability to maintain highly focused attention to detail
- This is a full-time, 1.0 FTE, exempt position, in office 12 months a year
- This position may require overtime during peak seasons
Compensation and Benefits:
Pay Range: $112,000.00 - $125.000.00 per year
