A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Corporate Health and Safety team at Valmont is responsible for strategy and objectives driving continuous improvement of health and safety practices across all business units. The Health and Safety Intern is an individual contributor role that will have an exciting opportunity to gain insights into the environment of a global manufacturing company and to work as part of a team that directly influences the company health and safety program. As a part of the Corporate Health and Safety team, the intern will be responsible for assisting in analysis of current health and safety programs, present recommendations for improvement, and work with global stakeholders to implement improvements. The Health & Safety Intern works directly with the Corporate Director of Health and Safety to ensure all sites have the tools and resources available to enable overall health and safety success with the utmost effectiveness and efficiency.

Valmont's internship program mission is to provide a hands-on learning experience through project work, leadership development, job shadowing and interaction with senior leadership.

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the Corporate Director of Health and Safety and has no direct or indirect reports
  • This role requires no travel
  • Assist in achieving EHS targets and objectives by supporting development, maintenance, and continuous improvement efforts of the safety management system
  • Support the safety management system integration for the business units for the leadership team, function managers, and front-line supervisors to drive EHS culture, compliance, and results
  • Preparation of reports and dashboards of key EHS performance indicators (leading and lagging) for presentation by business unit leadership teams
  • Identify and integrate Continuous Improvement concepts into the EHS
  • Acquire knowledge of health and safety while learning more regarding Valmont's manufacturing capabilities

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Junior or Senior standing in college, or MBA student, pursuing a degree in a relevant field
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA
  • The ability to dedicate up to 20 hours a week
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point
  • Excellent research and communication skills (including presentations)
  • Detail oriented with solid organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • Eager to learn and develop professionally

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. No travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
