The Machinist plans and performs a variety of machine operations utilizing manual machines to cut, shape, or form metal parts to specifications. This position reports directly to the Wichita PDS Operations Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Interprets blueprints and work orders to determine work to be done and to determine machining sequence and dimensions of finished part.
  • Sets-up and operates mill, lathe, and/or drill press to machine parts according to blue prints.
  • Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions, such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
  • Performs a variety of inspection and gauging operations to insure maintenance of quality standards and specifications; measures part for conformance to specifications; notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Utilizes override control to correct conditions that are out of tolerance or operating unusually.
  • Cleans machine, tooling, and parts; empties chip container.
  • Performs basic machine maintenance.
The employee will also perform duties in one or more of the following specialty areas as designated by the Machine Shop Supervisor or the incumbent may be cross-trained to perform functions in more than one specialty area.

Machinist - Welder/Grinder
  • Grinds parts by checking centers, measuring to determine how much to grind, setting up and operating manual or computerized machine, checking parts for quality.
  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
Machinist - Sub-Assembly
  • Operates manual shop equipment including mill and lathe for sub-assembly production; deburs, finishes and cleans parts; and takes parts to inspection.
  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
Machinist - Armatures
  • Finishes armatures by ensuring shafts are cleaned from the varnish room; chucks up the armature; uses undercutter to cut mica and lathe to finish turn the commutator ; inspects to determine if armature is within specifications.
Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three years previous machinist experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to apply basic shop math, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to work with close tolerances.
  • Ability to communicate verbally in one-on-one situations with management and co-workers, including the ability to speak simple sentences; listen to others without interrupting and get clarification when needed.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, work orders, and memos. Ability to read and understand blueprints and procedures. Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions and procedures furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to perform repetitive tasks.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to operate the equipment used in the department, including but not limited to measuring devices, undercut machine, mill, lathe, welder, grinder, drill press, disk and belt sander, pneumatic tools, hand tools.
  • Ability to interact in a positive and professional manner and to develop and maintain strong working relationships with co-workers and supervisor.
  • Strong attention to detail and focus on quality and accuracy.
  • Exhibits dependability, including following instructions; responding to supervisor's direction; and taking responsibility for own actions.
  • Ability to take initiative, including asking for and offering help when needed; performs work independently without being prompted
  • Ability to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; and work within deadlines.
