Medline is continuing to experience substantial growth in the digital commerce space. Our direct to consumer portfolio growth is critical to the success of the business. This person will manage and grow a team of Information Service (IS) professionals, influence technical strategic direction, interface with counterparts in IS to support B2C E-commerce development and systems operations. The primary function of the E-commerce Engineering Manager is to lead a team that develops and maintains the E-commerce B2C websites for Medline.

The Engineering Manager must come from the E-commerce space and have a strong technical background in full digital commerce stack including but not limited to E-commerce engines. Challenges will include an ongoing strategic technology expansion; onboarding and team building; vendor management and the ability to transition the existing team to industry standard DevOps practices. The Engineering Manager must possess the ability to partner with the business stakeholders in assessing needs and managing expectations for engineering and support solutions for as is and to be states. Technology stack can be learned but, must demonstrate a record of success in developing, operationalizing and supporting a world class E-commerce B2C portfolio.

This position can be based at either our Mundelein, IL office or in our downtown Chicago office.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage development & operations squads to support various business to consumer (B2C) websites.
  • Mentor and develop team members to enable personal and professional development.
  • Assess and address team skill and knowledge gaps to ensure the teams consistently have the knowledge, skills and experience to be successful in their roles on the team.
  • Provide technical leadership to Development and Operations squads.
  • Responsible for staffing, including recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, supervision, development, evaluation, and disciplinary actions.
  • Support an agile work environment to deliver new features/functionality while balancing time, cost and scope.
  • Ensure adequate release processes consistently performed to make certain new releases do not threaten the stability and function of the B2C websites.
  • Support robust change and configuration management practices.
  • Assist in managing service integrator and other technology vendor relationships.
  • Support the development of business cases, justifications and cost-benefit analysis for IS spend.
  • Collaborate with architecture team in devising the best architecture and designs including an emphasis on availability, reliability, scalability and security.
  • Support programs and projects portfolio to ensure timely and successful delivery.
  • Make technology recommendations related to Ecommerce B2C environment.
  • Reinforce guiding principles and ensure the infrastructure architecture validity to support business functions and future growth.
  • Work with internal business users to refine Medline's E-commerce B2C roadmap as well as provide a world class E-commerce B2C platform for realizing this roadmap.
  • Develop integrated processes across all E-commerce B2C DevOps functions.
  • Ensure the availability, reliability and security of Medline's E-commerce B2C sites
  • Research and recommend investment, development, installation, and use of technology improvements.
  • Respond to business critical emergency situations related to support and availability of the E-commerce B2C platform
  • Create and execute team work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and priorities as well as provide oversight for project managers and team leads relative to same.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or similar.
  • Experience managing development and operations of a high-traffic, direct to consumer website.
  • 3 years experience with implementing E-commerce engines. Adobe Magento strongly preferred.
  • 4 years experience with multiple applications servers.
  • 4 years experience with web servers (Apache, Nginx)
  • 3 years managing engineering /systems personnel.
  • 2 years experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)
  • Experience monitoring/maintaining site performance via APM tools like New Relic, AppDynamics or Dynatrace.
  • Develop a bot management strategy via tools like Cloudflare, Kasada and/or Splunk.
  • Experience with CDN/WAF tools like Cloudflare, Akamai or Fastly.
  • Strong team building skills
  • Proven track record of developing and motivating a staff of technical personnel.
  • Detailed understanding of E-commerce DevOps tools and solutions a plus.
  • Technical aptitude and demonstrated ability to work in a cross-functional environment.
  • Understanding of diverse application development practices (including both waterfall and agile methodologies) and release management best practices.
  • Experience with databases (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL)
  • Strong prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving and planning skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated collaborative skills and ability to work well within a team
  • Ability to work with and influence senior management
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment
  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting.
  • High degree of proficiency in MS Office Suite, Outlook, and Internet applications.
