The Member Engagement Specialist performs professional advocacy work for members and family members. The work will primarily serve to provide direct empowerment and support of members and their families who require the services and supports of the public system for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, or Substance Use Disorders. This position will represent in meetings and public outreach the perspective of families and members who utilize mental health, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder services. The position is intended to improve the quality of life for members and families and will also work to measure that through personal outreach.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Member Engagement Specialist is responsible for (though not limited to):

  • Acting as an Ombudsman for Members and Family Members Employee receives and logs complaint calls directed to them. Employee fulfills the role of an Ombudsman for grievances or appeals, helps to solve complaints informally whenever possible. Timely follow-up for all complaints are vital to ensuring resolutions within 30 days as per Alliance procedure;
  • Advocacy Participation in meetings to bring the needs of members to the Director of Community and Member Engagement, the Member Engagement Manager, the organization as a whole, and community stakeholders regarding problems with access to or delivery of appropriate care. Employee will focus on advocating within the catchment area through local organizations;
  • Evidence Based Practices - Provide leadership and consultation in the area of Evidence Based practices. Provide information to committees and teams on Best Practices, Evidence Based Practice, laws, regulations and policies, and special legislation that impacts members and family members in order to provide current information and consultation;
  • Family Assistance Employee will serve as a resource for educational opportunities, empowerment and satisfaction and quality of life issues for family members and guardians. Through general community contacts and response to family inquiries for assistance, provide consultation and guidance to family members in the interpretation of policy, regulations, services, rights, responsibilities, and other general information;
  • Information Development and Dissemination Employee will assist in the development of educational materials as well as participate in the training process. Employee will be staff support for the Human Rights Committee, Consumer/Family Advisory Committee or subcommittees and any other committee deemed necessary;
  • Quality of Life Measurement Employee will work to measure the impact services and supports have on the quality of life for members and families served through various surveys and programs.
  • System of Care and Child and Family Teams Employee will participate in and serve as an Alliance representative on SOC teams and function in numerous capacities as an advocate and assistant for members and their families.


Graduation from High School or equivalent and two years of experience with the population served; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Bachelors degree in a Human Services field preferred.Certified Peer Support Specialist or Family Peer Support certification preferred.

Special Requirement-The employee must be an openly declared individual or family member (past or present) of mental health, developmental disabilities or substance use disorder services.

Knowledge and Skills

A high level of diplomacy and discretion is required to effectively negotiate and resolve issues with minimal assistance from the Member Engagement Manager. This will require exceptional interpersonal skills, highly effective communication ability, and the propensity to make prompt independent decisions based upon relevant facts. Problem solving and conflict resolution skills are essential.

As a Member Engagement Specialist, the employee must exhibit an extensive understanding of Alliance business and have considerable knowledge of community resources and services available to AllianceMembers. The ability to establish and maintain favorable working relationships with members, families, stakeholders and Alliance employees is necessary. The ability to express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form as well as knowledge of cultural awareness and differences, and the ability to work with/or serve a diverse population is also needed.

$18.19 - $31.32
