Operations Manager, Computer Science

Working under the supervision of the Department Chair of Computer Science, the Operations Manager will work collaboratively with the department chair and associate department chairs, staff, faculty, Office of the Dean of the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science, and various Stevens academic and administrative offices. The Operations Manager will manage the day-to-day operations of the department of computer science, supervise departmental administrative staff, maintain relationships with various offices and departments across campus, and manage the operating budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Management of day-to-day administrative operations:

  • Develop, implement, document, and manage new routine processes for all department operations. Effectively communicate these processes with all stakeholders (students, faculty, and administration).
  • Supervise departmental administrative staff (senior administrative assistant, undergraduate academic advisors, and graduate academic advisors) in execution of proper day-to-day operations, including, but not limited to:
    • student interfaces and advising
    • faculty hiring
    • faculty payroll
    • track faculty promotion and reappointment
  • Work closely with the Department Chair regarding the departmental budgets to enable planning and forecasting.
  • Work closely with the Associate Department Chairs on undergraduate and graduate program needs.
  • Manage, execute, and support special department projects, as requested by the Department Chair and Associate Department Chairs.
  • Coordinate with the SES Deans Office regarding departmental space management.
  • Support computer science faculty on educational and research matters.

Departmental external interfaces, communication, and marketing:

  • Work closely with the Department Chair and the School of Engineering and Science Communications Office to promote the department internally and externally via articles, website, social media, periodic e-newsletters, annual report, and other communications
  • Work with the Office of Sponsored Projects and Office of Development to support research and outreach efforts for computer science faculty.
  • Provide technical writing support for computer science marketing and communication materials
  • Working closely with the Department Chair on external interfaces including External Advisory Board (EAB), and Alumni participation
  • Assist with industry and government outreach
  • Assist with seminar scheduling and posting, and handling department guests visits
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other units within Stevens

Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelors degree

Preferred Education: Masters degree

Required Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience in higher education administration

Preferred Experience: Operation Management

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop rapport with and positively influence a diverse audience
  • Ability to work closely with the Department Chair to develop strategies to achieve organizational goals
  • Strong project and time management skills
  • Ability to produce high-quality work on deadline while managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines
