Reports to the Manager, Advanced Pharmacy Services. Responsibilities include the accurate preparation and dispensation of all parenteral drug products according to physician orders. Oversees and utilizes the pharmacy support staff effectively.MISSION, VALUES and SERVICE GOALS

Ensures the accurate preparation and dispensation of all parenteral drug products according to physician orders:
  • Ensures that prescriptions dispensed comply with State and Federal regulations and pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Monitors patient drug profiles for duplications, interactions and drug-disease complications.
  • Initiates and updates patient care plans; also integrating care plans with other healthcare professionals.
  • Orders and maintains an inventory of sufficient quantity to support daily prescription volume.
  • Oversees and utilizes the pharmacy support staff effectively to complete prescription processing and assignments in a timely manner.
  • Ensures the timely delivery of pharmaceuticals and supplies to patients.
  • Assesses patient information to determine whether home infusion is appropriate for drug therapy.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
  • Participates in departmental performance improvement projects.
  • Adheres to Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organization (JCAHO) standards for the home care environment.
  • Adheres to any additional accreditation organization as required for the pharmacy environment.
  • Participates on various Beacon Health Ventures/Beacon Health System committees as requested.
  • Completes other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a BS degree in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, licensure or eligibility for licensure in the State of Indiana. A minimum of one year of successful hospital, home care or specialized compounding pharmacy experience is required.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Demonstrates pharmaceutical knowledge of medication compounding, formulation, stability and incompatibilities for the delivery of parenteral infusion therapies in the home.
  • Requires the ability to apply pharmacokinetics or other dosing parameters to specific patient data to dose various medications.
  • Demonstrates the analytical skills necessary to detect potential drug problems; also assists other healthcare providers in appropriate drug dosages and selection.
  • Requires the interpersonal and communication (both verbal and written) skills to interact effectively with patients, caregivers and healthcare personnel and provide medication and supply education.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of clinical drug management.
  • Requires the ability to assess insurance information for reimbursement and to surmise covered medications and supplies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use computerized drug information systems for prescription processing.
  • Requires the ability to manage time effectively in order to fulfill practice responsibilities so that priority is placed on the delivery of pharmaceutical care.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate patient medication and supply deliveries utilizing appropriate personnel.
Working Conditions
  • Works in a pharmacy environment.
  • Occasional exposure to potentially hazardous preparations.
Physical Demands
  • Requires the physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position.
