Job Description Summary:

The PhD Scientist, Bioinformatics contributes to PTCs drug discovery efforts by enhance the companys capacity to analyze and interpret complex biology data from the early drug discovery pipelines. The candidate is responsible to analyze complex omics data and build bioinformatics algorithms and tools to interpret the biology behind cell response to small molecule drugs. The ideal team member will work closely with other bioinformaticians, biologists, pharmacologists, and toxicologists in PTC. The selected candidate is also responsible for interpreting and communicating analysis results to his/her supervisor and the project team.

Job Description:

Primary duties/responsibilities:

  • With guidance from the advisor plans, initiates and executes data analysis and interprets and communicates results as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Develops and applies bioinformatics knowledge and skills

  • Design and apply computational methods, software, and statistic methods to analyze and mine data to generate actionable insights.

  • Analyze high-dimensional biology data (eg. transcriptomics, proteomics) to understand drug mechanism of action and/or identify biomarkers.

  • Presents findings internally to cross-functional teams.

  • Participates in the development and writing of patent applications or manuscript

  • Abides by all safety and regulatory guidelines.

  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Proficiency in a script language (eg. Python or Perl) and a statistical language (eg. R).

  • Proficiency in working in a UNIX/LINUX computational cluster or cloud.

  • As a main contributor of a field-recognized journal publication related to applying bioinformatics techniques to solve biological problems.

  • Strong knowledge in at least one of the following areas of biology: RNA processing, neurology, rare genetic disease, oncology, metabolic disease.

  • Experience to analyze high throughput genomics and genetics data, such as RNA-seq (transcriptomics), proteomics, metabolomics, etc.

  • Experience in at least one of the following bioinformatics skills: RNA alternative splicing analysis, motif discovery and analysis, RNA secondary structure analysis, pathway analysis, machine leaning.

  • Familiar with at least 4 of the following: bioinformatics/analysis tools (eg. STAR/Tophat, SAMtools, DESeq, IGV, Bioconductor, Metacore, IPA, etc.), databases (eg. TCGA, GEO, SRA, Gene Ontology, Clinvar, etc.) and websites (eg. CLUE.io, DepMap, CCLE, GTEx, UCSC genome browser, etc.).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced, matrixed, team environment.

  • Ability to learn and adapt new technologies quickly.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and achieve deadlines while maintaining an organized workspace.

* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.

  • Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, genetics, genomics, or related scientific fields with a minimum of 0 to 2 years experience. Fresh PhD graduates may apply!

*Special knowledge or skills and/or licenses or certificates preferred.

  • Ability to build bioinformatic pipeline or software for analyzing non-standard data types .

  • Knowledge and experience in machine leaning and artificial intelligence.

  • Demonstrated ability to build a machine leaning model based on DNA sequence features (eg. motifs).

  • Knowledge or experience in therapeutic modalities targeting RNAs (small molecular, antisense oligo, siRNA, miRNA, gene therapy).
