A Day in the Life
The Principal Control System Engineer will be a member of the R&D engineering team working in the development and support of respiratory and patient monitoring products. Control systems engineers are expected to work with other members of the engineering staff to provide technical systems level expertise and solutions to engineering problems. Control systems engineers will also participate in the creation of test plans, design verification requirements, and other project documentation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Recognized expert in Control Systems within an industry involving complex electro-pneumatic systems
  • Has proven experience leading a team of multidiscipline Engineers from Concept through Launch in a regulated industry.
  • Prior experience with developing, analyzing, diagnosing complex systems and optimizing performance.
  • Has practical experience with embedded control systems and dynamic systems.
  • Develops systems architectures for life support ventilators. Uses modeling, hardware-in-the-loop simulation and actual devices to develop, debug and test algorithms to meet required performance.
  • Models physical systems including electro-pneumatic sensors and actuators to drive decisions and component selection.
  • Evaluates tradeoffs between mechanical, electrical, software and control systems to obtain acceptable solutions with minimal risk to schedule and product cost.
  • Evaluates product performance on an on-going basis and initiates and evaluates required changes to the design to improve and optimize performance.
  • Works with other technical disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Software and Clinical) to develop, implement, and verify system solutions for a life support ventilator.
  • Performs system-level or component-level analysis.
  • Adheres to defined development procedures.
  • Demonstrates good design practices.
  • Defines and develops Use Cases for products based on the environment of clinical use.
  • Provides clinical relevance for parameters identified.
  • Develops specifications for ventilation breath delivery parameters in different modes of operation.
  • Participates in requirements development, systems level document reviews.
  • Responsible for evaluation of product performance and system verification and work products.
  • Design and development of test systems required for verification.
  • Develop and execute test protocols for system verification.
  • Implements system verification in accordance with defined development procedures.
  • Provides feedback to improve system verification and document quality.
  • Functions well in a team environment.
  • Generates high-quality work products.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Participates in other activities, such as performing hazard and risk analysis, reviews of designs and tests, etc.
  • Supports hardware, software and systems level verification and validation testing.
  • May provide hardware and firmware support on existing sustaining products.
  • May work on process improvement activities.
  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

BS in Engineering (Biomedical, Controls, Mechanical, or Electrical) or equivalent (Advanced degree preferred)

Experience:
10+ years or 8+ years with advanced degree engineering experience in industry (i.e. medical, aeronautics, nuclear, defense, etc.).

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
Lead a product development effort in the capacity of Lead Control System Engineer.
Model physical systems including pneumatic sensors and actuators, and design closed-loop control systems
Proficient with MATLAB and Simulink modeling/simulation
Fluent in C/C++ programming language
Strong analytical skills
Familiar with systems engineering processes, in particular top down design using system requirements.
Experience or significant interest in medical systems or the interaction between devices and the human physiology.
Able to work in a cross functional team environment.

Skills/Competencies:

  • Knowledge of automated test systems.
  • Medical instrument development experience is a plus.
  • Experience with a documented product development process or familiarity with FDA and ISO standards is a plus.
  • Familiar with risk management techniques (i.e. Risk Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), etc.) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with FDA Quality Systems Regulations (QSR) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of automated test systems is a plus.
