The Technology Specialist role will responsible for the building of technology roadmaps for the Surgical Innovations business Operating Room of the Future vision. This work will require working across all businesses in Surgical Innovations and seek the building block technologies that are key enablers of medical devices and connected ecosystems.

The position requires a strong science foundation with the ability to understand complex, technical product information. Qualified candidates have strong organizational and prioritization skills to successfully manage several projects simultaneously; ability to navigate dynamic environments; strong communication skills; a high degree of initiative and motivation; confidence and a proven ability to work with and present to all levels of management; and an ability to influence others and perform under pressure. Candidates must also be strong strategic thinkers and be comfortable working in ambiguous situations with variable outcomes.


  • Lead, demonstrate ownership of and accountability for the creation of technology roadmaps within the Surgical Innovations portfolio
  • Update and manage fluidity of roadmaps due to trends, disruptions, and other directional forces
  • Assess technology requirements, consult cross functional internal teams to explore needs and requirements across Surgical Innovations businesses to recommend pathways for development
  • Identify and seek to fill roadmap gaps through partnerships and collaborations with other internal Medtronic businesses or external opportunities
  • Detect and communicate trends in technology innovation relevant to the future portfolio
  • Contribute to technology research and due diligence for new collaborations
  • Active member of project teams helping to resolve issues and assess opportunities
  • Collaborate with the broader team of research engineers, development teams, marketers, program managers, etc. who contribute technology roadmap execution
  • Provide support in generating portfolio technology objectives, budgeting, completion metrics
  • Communicate technology objectives, project status/new potential explorations and goal setting guidance to wide range of audience and stakeholders
  • Effectively maneuver through ambiguous outcomes in a fast-paced, ever changing business

    A Day in the Life
    Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

    • Leads or leverages cross functional teams to evaluate, develop and manage projects for new product development and ongoing lifecycle management of products, processes and therapies.
    • Oversees and manages the operational aspects of ongoing projects and serves as liaison between project management and planning, project team, and line management.
    • Manages the development and implementation process of a company's products and services involving departmental or cross-functional teams focused on the delivery of new or existing products and processes.
    • Reviews status of projects and budgets; manages schedules and prepares status reports.
    • Monitors the project from initiation through delivery.
    • Assesses project issues and develops resolutions to meet productivity, quality, and client-satisfaction goals and objectives.
    • Develops mechanisms for monitoring project progress and for intervention and problem solving with project managers, line managers, and clients.
    • Gathers requirements, works on requirements planning, requirements elicitation and requirements management to ensure they meet demands of project's key stakeholders.
    • Communicates with stakeholders, obtains stakeholder engagement to ensure the end products or processes will solve the business problems.

    Must Have: Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelors degree required
    • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

    Nice to Have
  • Data Science background preferred - especially in developing/launching technologies within healthcare informatics, decision support systems or other data driven products
  • Good understanding of surgical medical device marketplace, technologies and product development process
  • Strong analytical, financial and valuation skills; solid understanding of due diligence process; general knowledge of contracts and contracting process
