The Product Development Manager will serve as a key member in the Sensor and Infusion engineering department and have the experience and drive to lead the development and characterization of insulin infusion products. Responsible for chemistry and material testing activities and subcutaneous infusion product development. The Product Development Manager will provide direction and leadership to product development team using broad cross-functional knowledge and comprehensive management skills. The Product Development Manager will be responsible for monitoring and tracking progress toward pre-established objectives, assesses risk, and implements strategies to ensure successful delivery of the product.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Conducts exploratory research to produce new knowledge and potential products; conceives, organizes, promotes, and executes ideas and plans to increase chemistry's role in and contribution to the discovery and chemical approaches to meet objectives in product development projects.
  • Develops research proposals to provide a technically and economically sound basis for developing and evaluating new or improved products, processes, and analytical and physical chemistry testing techniques.
  • Drives timely, high-quality execution of R&D study plans through direct reports and personal expertise. Shapes continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen technical competencies and collaboration with other teams.
  • Aligns activities of the group with evolving Business Unit priorities. Anticipate, identify and provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems based on chemistry and product development experience.
  • Manages, mentors, and develops engineers and technicians. Collaborates with core teams to establish objectives and evaluates progress of direct reports.
  • Responsible for managing functional cost center budget and resource allocation.
  • Engages directly with senior management stakeholders and external partners.
  • Collaborates with other departments within Medtronic on development projects including maintenance, qualification and calibration of instruments and equipment.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional (operations, quality, regulatory, marketing, human factors, clinical) teams to develop additional capability for existing technology and process improvements.
  • Contributes to project decision-making using personal expertise, customer input, and feasibility assessment.
  • Coordinates with partners, suppliers and external resources needed in developing and implementing new product, new process and/or equipment and tooling.
  • Performs job function in accordance with applicable cGMP environment and ISO standards.
  • Able to travel up to 10% Domestic &/or International.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelors Degree with 5+ years of product development, chemistry, material or engineering experience.


Advanced degree with 3+ years of product development, chemistry, material or engineering experience.

Nice to Have

  • Masters in Chemistry or Chemistry Engineering
  • Program management experience in the medical device, aerospace, automotive or other highly regulated industry
  • Experience in product development of drug delivery devices, preferably insulin delivery devices
  • Experience devising and implementing streamlined processes and strategic programs to improve efficiency, timeliness, and productivity
  • Experience in leading within matrix organizations requiring strong influence management skills
  • Change agent --willingness and ability to lead and institute change
  • Business acumen: ability to think and act from an overall "best for the business" perspective
  • Results oriented: strong sense of urgency
  • Strong analytical, planning, organization and time management skills to effectively develop and execute comprehensive programs and budgets
  • Effective decision-making skills with ability to negotiate and balance decisions and priorities across needs of several functional departments and willingness to make tough decisions
