Who we are looking for

As a global systemically important financial institution, State Street has substantial regulatory obligations in its home jurisdiction and multiple jurisdictions in which it is obliged to submit Recovery & Resolution plans. This position provides legal counsel support to the Recovery & Resolution Planning Team.

The ideal candidate would have the following experience:

  • knowledge of bank regulatory or U.S. insolvency law;

  • contract drafting experience;

  • knowledge of the business areas of State Street or other custody bank specifics like Clearing / Settlement / Payments; and / or

  • experience in Capital & Liquidity matters.

The Recovery and Resolution Planning Office is responsible for:

  • Managing and coordinating the respective Plans of State Street, including non-U.S. jurisdictions in which the firm is obliged to develop a Recovery / Resolution Plan (e.g. Germany, UK, Canada, HK).

  • Developing and maintaining the Recovery Plan process

  • Coordinating with regulatory authorities on matters related to resolution and recovery planning

  • Coordinating with international project teams and external advisors

  • Analyzing interconnections and dependencies across State Streets infrastructure, including financial, operational and contractual arrangements; and

  • Reviewing material events at State Street, including corporate restructurings, the establishment or elimination of legal entities, entry into a new market, jurisdiction, product or service, and merger and acquisition activities, to determine any effects on State Streets resolution and recovery planning processes

The RRP team that you will be joining plays an important role in the overall success of State Street and the stability of financial markets, as the RRP team oversees and maintains recovery and resolution planning for all of State Street, which is one of the largest world-wide global custodians and global asset managers.

The RRP team responds to evolving RRP regulatory expectations in the U.S. and the other jurisdictions in which State Street operates and to material changes in State Streets business model that affect resolvability. The RRP legal role coordinates with U.S. and other regulatory authorities, including describing how State Streets RRP capabilities align to regulatory expectations and how State Street seeks to meet RRP requirements across all the jurisdictions in which it operates. The ideal candidate is a team-player and skilled at navigating a complex organization.

What you will be responsible for

In your role, you will strive to provide practical regulatory legal advice that aligns RRP requirements to the various business or corporate function owners and their business models and respective jurisdictions.

As AVP/Counsel, you will be responsible for:

  • Advising and working with internal legal, business, compliance and risk partners to address RRP related matters as a trusted adviser.

  • Providing legal and regulatory advice to business partners regarding laws and regulations, related to Recovery and Resolution Plans (e.g. advising how rules, guidance should be reflected in the Plans).

  • Drafting and reviewing responses to the regulators regarding RRP (legal) matters.

  • Instructing and managing external counsel.

  • Supporting the RRP teams in subsidiaries and branches of SSC / SSBT on RRP related matters.

  • Supporting the drafting of contracts as they relate to RRP matters.

  • Supporting our internal clients and providing responses for RFPs.

Education & Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris doctorate from an accredited university

  • License to practice in Massachusetts or another state of the United States

  • Three (3) years or more of experience in the financial services and/or corporate department of a major law firm or equivalent experience in the financial services sector
