Our Calhoun location in Tennessee, United States is currently seeking talent to fill the position of Safety Manager. This job is permanent, full-time.

Descriptive Data

Job Title: Safety Manager

Primary Purpose

The Safety Manager leads, plans, develops, and improves the safety culture and safety and wellness programs in the facility. The Safety Manager provides safety-related technical expertise and advice. Directs and coordinates activities within the organization in order to meet safety and health targets and realize the corporate visions and values. Holds self and other accountable for safety compliance and performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and recommend corrective measures.

  2. Develop safety and health policy and procedures and oversee implementation to comply with government standards.

  3. Ensure that all employees, visitors, contractors are trained in accordance with OSHA regulations and Corporate guidelines.

  4. Maintain all required records and ensure timely mandated reporting.

  5. Ensure safety audits are completed and action items are addressed in a timely manner.

  6. Promote safe work environment by the use of positive communications, incentives, auditing, good housekeeping practices and training.

  7. Ensure that all systems are in place to protect the facility.

  8. Direct and supervise the Safety staff.

  9. Conduct accident investigations and ensure follow-up reporting.

Knowledge and experience

  • Four-year degree (Health or Safety related field preferred).

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred

  • Demonstrated success in Accident Prevention and Health Risk Assessment.

  • Command of OSHA regulations and Workers Compensation State rules

  • 10 years safety management work experience (pulp and paper mill level strongly preferred)

  • Track record of driving and implementing change in a manufacturing environment

  • Familiar with wide range of safety management systems (e.g. STOP or Safe Start)

Communicates effectively: Communicates key elements of regulatory issues to management and operations personnel; written and oral communications of complex concepts and regulations are clear and concise, leading to awareness, understanding and action by receivers; works with others in a constructive and effective manner including Federal, State and local regulatory agencies and operations management;

Learning agile: able to successfully apply previous learning to new and/or challenging and/or critical situations

Relishes leading: Establishes reputation as a leader, not only for Safety processes, but within the general organization as well

Adapts to differences: comfortable with change; challenges constructively but then goes along with change; can support things not totally agreed with; easily makes transitions to new and different; relates well to senior leadership; handles conflict evenhandedly; open to views of others

Strategic skills: looks to the broadest view of an issue; comfortable with complex; doesnt get mired in tactics and details; can juggle a lot of mental balls; can bring unrelated streams of information together for a compelling vision; can discuss multiple aspects and impacts of issues, and project them into the future; good at creating meaning; runs multiple what if scenarios.

Organizes effectively: can orchestrate multiple activities at once to accomplish a goal; arranges information/files in a useful manner; spends own time and time of others on whats important; quickly zeros in on critical few; senses what will help/hinder accomplishing a goal; creates focus; able to make a timely, even quick decision; accurately scopes out projects; breaks down work into process steps; schedules tasks and people; measures performance against goals; says no if cant get to it; remembers commitments.
