Primary Function of Position:
Intuitive Surgical, Inc. produces the Ion Bronchoscopy system, a minimally invasive robotic catheter system that accesses deep into the lungs and offers treatment not possible with conventional tools

The senior technician will support design engineers to build new steering catheter prototypes. The ideal candidate will be fully proficient in all typical catheter manufacturing processes. The candidate should be comfortable working with minimal supervision, and with minimal work instructions and be able to take ideas from R&D engineers and figure out how to build fully functional catheter prototypes.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • He/She will be responsible for completion of all manufacturing process on prototype steerable and non-steerable catheters including soldering, laser welding, microscopic wire and cable stripping, hot box reflowing and thermal bonding, braiding, adhesive bonding and laminating.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to train production operators and draft manufacturing instructions as products mature.
  • In addition to early prototype builds with minimal instruction, the candidate should be equally comfortable building V&V units by following formal work instructions and be adept at completing lot history records.
  • He/She will conduct wide variety of testing at a system, catheter or sub assembly level.
  • The candidate will also be expected to design and build simple fixtures or tools as necessary to help build prototypes.
  • The ideal candidate will be resourceful with a 'can do' attitude and will be expected to work with available materials and tools (that may not be ideal size) while optimized designs are on order.

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as an R&D prototyping technician supporting all stages of complex catheter product development.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with steerable catheter prototyping in an R&D environment.
  • Skilled in all advanced catheter prototype fabrication techniques as outlined below with both detailed and general design descriptions.
    • Braiding: Highly skilled at running Steeger horizontal braiders including changing out wire sizes, replacing ratchet and carrier tension springs, assembling multiple lumens through the nose cone, incorporating axial members through the triaxial posts etc.
    • Laminating: Highly skilled at handling and loading thin walled flexible extrusions onto mandrels, selecting appropriate heat shrink materials and determining lamination parameters to achieves optimal product performance.
    • Thermal bonding/reflowing with hotbox: Highly skilled at flowing and shaping various durometers of thermoplastics over braid and rings and achieving reliable thermal bonds while avoiding exposed braid.
    • Adhesive Bonding: Highly proficient with the handling and application of all types of medical device adhesives including cyanoacrylates, UV curable adhesives and 2 part epoxies.
    • Soldering/laser welding: Highly experienced bonding metals including determining process parameters, with and without fixturing for tensile strength and electrical continuity.
    • General Assembly: Experienced with all steerable catheter assembly processes including but not limited to liner stretching, coil pipe termination, braid termination, mandrel removal and pullwire termination
  • Experience with small hand tools, such as tweezers, cutters, pin vise, crimpers, blades
  • Proficient working under microscopes with small parts
  • Experience working in cleanroom environment
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
