Position Summary:

The Sr Mechanical Engineer - Instrument Enclosures NPI is part of the Enclosure Experience (EXE) New Product Introduction (NPI) team collaborating with various internal groups to launch instruments into manufacturing with enclosure designs and materials that possess high quality cosmetic finishes that meet or exceed the Industrial Design intent. This role reports into the Illumina Platform NPI team in the Operations organization in the areas of NPI, manufacturing transfer, DFx, and troubleshooting of new products. The selected candidate possesses an energetic passion for visual style, aesthetics, and visual quality. Illumina sets a high bar for Visual Brand Language and Industrial Design for our instrument platforms, so this role is integral in achieving illumina's mission and vision.

Responsibilities:

  • Work cross functionally with Marketing, Human Factors, User Experience (Ux), Product Development, and product teams to buy off and lock down on final mechanical design for materials and subsystems that have cosmetic value.
  • Provide design input and DFx for instrument enclosures and enclosure mechanical systems working closely with the product development teams.
  • Drive selection and qualification of critical suppliers and lead team towards suppliers with strong capabilities in delivering high cosmetic (CMF) quality enclosures and materials.
  • Lead module design transfer (into manufacturing) of innovative, robust, and cost conscious, instrument enclosure designs within Illumina's instrumentation portfolio.
  • Partner with world-wide Contract Manufacturing & Original Design Manufacturing (CM/ODM) partners throughout the new product transfer and early production phases to achieve manufacturing readiness.
  • Support Product Development of incoming, in-line, and end-of-line sub-assembly/instrument tests to ensure performance and manufacturing targets are met
  • Support protocol generation and execution for validating our instrument enclosures and manufacturing processes.
  • Interface with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) teams to create and maintain bill of materials and documentation to enable successful build of prototype, pilot, and production instruments.

Requirements:

  • Desire to work on instrument enclosures with high performance/quality cosmetic finishes, and industrial design.
  • Experience with instrument enclosures or product enclosures required.
  • NPI or Manufacturing experience required.
  • Comfortable working in an open, collaborative, and team-oriented matrix environment required.
  • Technical competency in mechanical engineering or equivalent engineering discipline required.
  • Demonstrated ability with managing deliverables and supporting issue resolution highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a team environment on multiple concurrent projects in a complex, dynamic, sometimes ambiguous environment preferred.
  • International and domestic travel of up to 20% at times with flexibility.

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelors or master's in mechanical Engineering with 4-8 years of work experience is preferred

The estimated base salary range for this role based in the United States of America is: $103,500 - $155,300. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
