A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Staff Engineer position is responsible for providing technical engineering support and assistance with project management on a variety of government and private sector projects. The Staff Engineer will work with CES project managers (Engineers, Geologists, and Soil Scientists) under the direction of a Principal Engineer to develop engineering projects from initial scope to final commissioning. CES' typical engineering projects include preparation or administration of the following work products: planning documents, designs, specifications, construction related activities, and commissioning. With a tagline that reads, "Synergy of Water and Science" and core service areas in water, agriculture, engineering, and environmental, the Staff Engineer will largely work on regional projects.

Essential Functions:

  • Preparation of design drawings and specifications
  • Preparation preliminary and detailed engineering cost estimates
  • Observation and documentation of construction activities
  • Preparation of written reports
  • Oversight of sub-consultants
  • Performance of environmental monitoring and reporting of activities
  • Project management assistance
  • Participate in traditional environmental engineering services such as permitting, regulatory compliance, report preparation and impact studies
  • Contribute to a strong team working environment
  • Provide effective, personal outgoing interaction with existing and prospective clients
  • This position may require up to 20% traveling, including overnight stay
  • This position reports to a Principal Engineer and does not have any direct or indirect reports

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience or Associates Degree with 5+ years of experience or 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Engineer in Training (EIT or FE) or able to obtain within twelve (12) months
  • Experience with use and operation of computer aided drafting programs
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Valid U.S. driver's license
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Clearly communicate technical information to colleagues, clients and regulators
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and independently
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple and simultaneous priorities
  • Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Chemical, Civil or Environmental Engineering
  • Completion of a Certified Project Management Course with professional designation
  • The drive to obtain professional certification as a Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Career emphasis in water resources, geotechnical, agriculture, or mining related fields of study
  • Private consulting experience

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

The majority of the principle duties are performed in an office environment with approximately 20% working in a field environment at project sites on uneven and rough terrain. The work is sometimes performed outside in weather conditions, including heat, cold, and temperature swings, for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this positon, the incumbent may work near heavy equipment and moving mechanical parts. Most of the physical effort is due to travel and work performed outside at project work sites and may require an overnight stay in a hotel room. The incumbent frequently is required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, type, draw, and design. Reaching hands and arms above shoulder height while working in the office or out in a field may be required. The employee is occasionally required to stand for extended periods. The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Incumbent must have a valid US driver's license and be willing to drive to the various project sites.
