Position Summary:

Illumina is seeking an advanced-career Human Factors Engineer to join our growing team of experience designers and researchers as we build best-in-class customer experiences across all Illumina hardware and software platforms and touchpoints. You must be highly skilled with user centered design activities with the ability to drive large projects at a system-level and must have a strong emphasis on human computer interaction, human factors, ergonomics, applied cognitive research, user experience design and human system integration design. You must be able to translate business objectives and customer needs into stellar customer experiences, while resolving technical and team challenges with little oversight. In this role you will be responsible for driving the user experience across a wide array of projects, and must be passionate about understanding the underlying personas, use cases, goals, and pain points of our customers, and use these insights to deliver quality products and features. You must be extremely organized, able to knit the big picture together while sweating the details, love collaborating with others and driving teams towards success.

All About You

Responsibilities:

  • Define and design human factors solutions for new product development projects from product conception through post-release
  • Provide Human Factors support across the product lifecycle including voice of the customer research, customer and user needs identification, development of user and workplace profiles and use cases, end-to-end workflows, requirements specification, information architectures, design concepts (creation of story boards and prototypes) and detailed designs (creation of graphical user interfaces and design specifications), usability testing, user error analysis, benchmark usability testing and human factors validation.
  • Plan, design, and execute usability evaluations, scenarios/use cases validations, and other user-centered design research
  • Analyze and synthesize data from user research and usability studies, and partner closely with design and product teams to synthesize findings into actionable design principles.
  • Develop and maintain usability engineering documents including User Centered Design regulated documents, requirements, and system usability hazard and risk assessment
  • Provide design recommendations based on userneedsand results from formative and summative research across the product life cycle
  • Contribute tocontinuous improvement for User Centered Design and human factors development processes and tools
  • Provide coaching to juniorteam members to improve human factors and usability engineering competencies

Requirements:

  • MS Degree in Human Factors is required. A PhD in Human Factors is a plus
  • 8+ years of human factors and ergonomics experience supporting hardware and software product development
  • Demonstrated ability to technically leaddesigns across product lineswith ability to communicate with users, customers, engineering, product management, regulatory, clinical validation and complianceteams
  • Strong understanding of the Product Development Life Cycle and human factors usability engineering practices
  • Possess a complete and deep understanding of human factors and usability engineering, human centered design and integration in regards to the requirements prescribed in ISO 13407 Human-Centered Design Process for Interactive Systems, ISO 62366-1:2015, 62366-2: 2016 and FDA Guidance on Human Factors (2016)
  • Able to gather and specify critical human factors system requirements, and clearly communicate design constraints and expected validation approaches internally and externally including representing theExperience Designteam during FDAand CE Markaudits
  • Demonstrated experience with system level design, integration, and validation of usability requirements and hazardmitigationassociated with product development
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in human factors/usability engineering for medical products, designing, leading, analyzing both formative and summative studies including user research, focus groups, structured in-depth interviews, user needs and requirements analysis, user error analysis and use related failure mode and effects analysis in defining critical tasks and human factors validation
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods is required
  • Experience with agile methodologies a plus
  • Experience within lab and remote user research tools such as Morae and Userzoom
  • Proven project management skills and track record of delivering commitments on time
  • Ability to prioritize time between multiple projects and stay flexible with changing schedules and projects while working with multiple teams
  • A proven track record of working well withmultidisciplinary and multicultural teams
  • Excellent analytical ability especially with regard to observation of user behavior
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
