POSITIONPURPOSE


The Unit Leader is responsible for the activities and personnel in providing a positive camping experience for a group or site; planning and implementing programs and activities appropriate for a specific group or site; ensure safety and well-being of campers; supervising campers and staff to ensure that camper and parent needs and expectationsare met.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Read and be accountable for YMCA, state licensing, and ACA guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Supervise by being able to identify, KNOW, SEE, RESPOND to ensure the safety of each child in your direct care at all times. Adhere to small group/ratio established by the state licensing agency and ACA.
  • Plan and oversee the implementation of a variety of camp activities; ensure activities are age appropriate and contribute to the overall growth and development of the campers.
  • Ensure comprehensive and inclusive activities. Actively participate in activities as required to encourage participation. Ensure that all program objectivesare met.
  • Monitor and train staff to ensure effective implementation of programs and activities. Ensure staff adherence to all policies and procedures. Coach and train staff in providing a quality camping experience.
  • Build relationships with staff and parents to ensure that expectations for camp and qualityare being met. Provide effective communication to parents on camp activities and individual accomplishments.
  • Interpret and maintain safety and health policies and procedures; train staff on roles and responsibilities in emergency procedures; ensure appropriate behavior of campers and staff to avoid risk of accidents; maintain awareness of camper physical well-being; conduct safety programs each week; adhere to policies and procedures when caring for injured campers; report all incidents. Ensure a safe environment.
  • Prepare and distribute quality, brand compliant, up to date, written communication with the parent/guardian(s) (example: Family Board maintenance, monthly newsletters, program updates, and announcements).
  • Ensure effective use of all resources, including staff.
  • Actively campaign for the Annual Campaign and work to develop donors and volunteers.
  • Attend conferences and parent nights when necessary.
  • Participate as a member of the staff team and perform any related duties as required.
  • Participate in staff training, meetings and conferences as required.
  • Administer prescribed medicine to campers at appropriate times.
  • Monitoring a sign-in and out procedures to assure safety of campers.
  • Be able to perform any and all duties of a Senior Counselor when necessary
  • Ensure quality of camp by noting any problems, safety concerns, or equipment disrepair. Ensure camp and equipment cleanliness.




          Essential Duties and Responsibility Addition for All Staff:


          In order to ensure the health and wellness of the employees, members, and visitors of the GPY YMCA and all locations where GPY YMCA operates business, in addition to the essential duties and responsibilities listed onyour current job description, the following are additional duties and responsibilities that may be assigned at any time where appropriate during the COVID-19 pandemic or any pandemic/communicable disease where the duties are appropriate.These additions are not tobe construedas exclusive or all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned and required as needed:


          • Enhanced cleaning in areas where the employeeis not directly/normally assignedas well as normally assigned areas. All employeesare expectedto assist in and support the efforts of the GPY YMCA when it comes to health and wellness for the facility and other locations where the GPY YMCA conducts business. All employees are expected to wipe machines, screens, computers, or anything that is used after they use it, all employees are expected to wash their hands on a frequent basis (recommended every 30 minutes if possible), and use hand sanitizer when hand washing is not available.
          • Temperature Taking/Wellness Questionnaire Taking Assignments
          • Directing Members/Visitors in areas where the employee is both normally and not normally assigned
          • The employeemay be assignedto areas other than their normally assigned area as needed to meet organizational needs. Examples of this include, but are not limited to,being assignedareas to count people, help direct flow of traffic in an area, being assigned to a specific area to assist with doors, and any other duty as needed by the organization.
          • All other duties as assigned as it relates to COVID-19 or other communicable disease and/or pandemic.


            ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS


            • At least 18 years old
            • High school graduate or equivalent
            • Orenrolled in a minimum of 2 years of child development coursework approved by state licensing requirements.
            • Have experience working with children and at least six months experience working as a Y Camp Counselor or as a counselor in a comparable program.
            • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and experience working with children.
            • Ability to deal effectively with inappropriate behavior and recognize hazard situations.
