Position Summary

F5 is looking for a Systems Reliability Engineer to join the IT Operations team. In this role you will be responsible to incorporate aspects of software engineering and apply them to infrastructure and operations problems. The main goals of an SRE III are to create scalable and highly reliable systems. The successful candidate is responsible for planning and executing the integration of Windows based products and services into a complex data center and network environment in an efficient, secure, scalable, reliable, and cost-effective manner. SRE will also often perform light programming (usually scripting, which involves writing programs to automate tasks).

Primary responsibilities include evaluation, implementation, and support for Windows based solutions for F5 Networks production systems and applications. This includes administration and support of:

  • Active Directory and associated systems
  • Office 365 services (Core Operations support) and Exchange 2016/Exchange Online administration.
  • 3rd party Microsoft Windows based applications
  • Various Microsoft Windows Server Roles/Features

This position is also responsible for planning and executing small-to-medium scale projects within the Technical Operations team. Typical projects would include new business unit initiatives and updates to existing products and services that require planning, incredible attention to detail, and perfect execution.

You will spend up to 50% of their time doing operations related work such as supporting issues, on-call, writing documentation, and system management. Since the system that an SRE oversees is expected to be highly automatic and self-healing, the SRE should spend the other 50% of their time on implementing new features, upgrade (Infrastructure / OS) and Automation (Optional).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Bring the SRE approach for Availability, Reliability, Scalability, Disaster Recovery, Problem/Incident Management, and Performance of production services.
  • Office 365 / Exchange Online (Core Operations support)
  • Enterprise Spam Administration (Cisco IronPort)
  • Implementation and administration of DMARC policies
  • Active Directory and associated systems
  • 3rd party Microsoft Windows-based applications
  • Various Microsoft Windows Server Roles/Features
  • Evaluate, select and integrate 3rd party products in the support of new or existing services.
  • Provide technical leadership on large/complex systems and platform projects.
  • Works as part of a team to continuously evaluate, troubleshoot, and improve existing systems.
  • Run the system lifecycle from design and implementation, to turn-down and decommissioning.
  • Write documentation for peers and partners supporting applicable systems.
  • Work with business partners to define SLOs and SLIs and build robust monitoring solutions supporting agreed upon metrics.
  • Lead communications efforts regarding both system issues/activities as well as blameless post-mortems with all partners.
  • Be part of the on-call rotations to provide 24/7 support.
  • Responsible for upholding F5s Business Code of Ethics and for promptly reporting violations of the Code or other company policies.
  • Administration of Microsoft AD and associated roles (DNS, DHCP, Print/File Services, RDS, GPO, WSFC, DFS)
  • Deep knowledge of SCCM 2016 Administration
  • Administration of F5 Data Backup and Recovery systems, including Rubrik, and Commvault Data Protection
  • Exchange 2016 on-premises administration and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to develop scripting and automation processes, using PowerShell and associated modules (Exchange)
  • Lead, maintain, and improve a comprehensive OS and Application patching program for systems within team scope of responsibility.
  • Support daily operations by resolving incidents, requests, and problems associated with various IT systems.
  • Provide comprehensive administration of assigned systems, including product evaluation, selection, installation, integration, user support, problem resolution, & ongoing maintenance of hardware, operating systems, networking, and application software.
  • Lead technical implementation tasks on large/complex systems and infrastructure projects.
  • Lead project teams to develop, document, and analyze business & technical requirements; conduct alternatives analyses; prepare project specifications, plans & schedules; connect with partners; coordinate approvals & necessary resources; and deliver fully validated and tested results on-time, within budgeted costs.
  • Lead, develop, and implement forward-looking strategies for satisfying worldwide business needs and maintaining technical currency with assigned systems.
  • Establish & Maintain up-to-date configuration and recovery documentation for assigned systems.
  • Lead ongoing communications regarding system issues/activities with all department executives and managers, end users, IT staff, vendors, customers, etc.
  • Ensure roles and responsibilities of junior team members are adhered to, mentor and act as a role model.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to efficiently multitask and prioritize work, juggling daily support responsibilities with multiple project/product driven activities.
  • Ability to run Enterprise Email (Exchange Online preferred).
  • Deep understanding of mail flow in a hybrid environment.
  • Experience running DMARC email authentication protocol.
  • Ability to lead Enterprise Email (Exchange Online preferred).
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with customers and business partners such as Customer Service and Product Management to turn business requirements into technical implementation.
  • Be able to prioritize work, juggling daily support responsibilities with project/product driven roles and actions to automate/evolve the environment.
  • Hands-on experience and skills with operating systems (Windows 2008/2008 R2/2012/2012 R2/2016 2019), infrastructure applications (DNS/DHCP/Print/File, etc.), and general IT infrastructure operations.
  • Minimum 5 years experience directly administering and managing Microsoft Active Directory in a medium-large production environment.
  • Microsoft Teams and Exchange 2016/Exchange online administration experience desired
  • Microsoft SCCM platform administration
  • High degree of experience with VMware vSphere, Hyper V platforms desired.
  • Experience with Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure AD desired.
  • Performing Email Migration, Integration activities.
  • Familiar with Azure ATP policies, End to End support on O365 services.
  • Experience planning, architecting, and executing migrations of on-premises systems and services to the cloud.
  • Deep problem Analysis and Solving Skills: ability to solve a complex issue down to potential contributing components, identify root cause if possible or gather supporting evidence for escalation.
  • Incorporate daily sustaining roles with continued growth on strategic improvements. Prioritize issues, resolve what requires immediate attention, and coordinate actions/maintain focus to achieve the greatest efficiency.
  • Skill to investigate and resolve performance issues with Windows physical or virtual machines.
  • Be able to work with customers or customer representatives such as Customer Service and Product Management to understand requirements and translate them into efficient system designs and operational support structures.
  • Deep level competency in administration/support of Cisco and Dell Servers, UCS Blades.
  • Deep knowledge of current IT infrastructure standard methodologies.
  • Experienced systems analysis and design skills with broad focus on supporting systems.
  • Proficient familiarity with IT governance methodologies (ITIL, COBIT, MOF, etc.)


  • Bachelors Degree in computer science or related field and 5+ years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 4 years in an enterprise-level system engineering or reliability engineering role
  • Strong base knowledge of operating systems, networking basics, and security best-practices.
  • Knowledge of Agile delivery and DevOps principles
  • Working knowledge of at least one Public Cloud provider (Azure, AWS, GCP, etc.)
  • Office 365 services (Core Operations support) and Cisco IronPort gateway
  • Understanding of Agile tools likes Jira or Azure DevOps
  • Familiarity with IT governance methodologies (ITIL, COBIT, MOF, etc.)
  • Technical certifications a plus
