Northern Trust Alternative Fund Services ("AFS") is a Global fund administrator specializing in administering assets of hedge funds, private equity managers, managed account platforms investing in alternative strategies and alternative fund of funds. This role is on a high-profile Client dedicated team within Reconciliation & Control.

The candidate will be empowered and encouraged to work independently and think about global financial products from a risk and control perspective. They would carry out activities that are large in scope, cross-functional and technically challenging. Provides comprehensive, consulting and leadership to team and partners at a high technical level.

The candidate will achieve goals through own work and expertise. They will have specific knowledge or expertise typically gained through formal education or equivalent experience. Will leverage conceptual and practical knowledge in their own job responsibilities and basic knowledge of related job responsibilities. Solves complex problems. May lead projects or project steps within a broader project or may have accountability for on-going activities or objectives. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.


Oversees automated reconciliations across global equity, fixed income, cash and derivative markets.
Proactively escalates issues delaying the reconciliation with client senior management or broker senior relationship managers and ensures root cause is understood and remediated.
Ensures reconciliations are produced within service agreement timelines, typically prior to market open.
Drives setting up of new reconciliations for new asset classes that are scalable. Includes defining reconciliation business requirements, walkthroughs with client/IT, testing and escalation of any roadblocks or issues. Knowledge of trading lifecycle across multiple products / asset classes is a plus.
Become subject matter expert on proprietary reconciliation tool. Includes understanding House data, Broker data, how the data is normalized and matching logic
Independently answer questions from operation teams on reconciliation logic
Promotes Reconciliation Efficacy
Uses analytical metric tools to ensure reconciliation exceptions are indicative of risk
Perform historical trend analysis and implement workflow or systemic solutions to resolve issues derived from review
Proactively raises enhancements to match rule logic and leads testing and implementation
Supports upstream changes to data source and ensures impact to the reconciliation is within expectations
Ensures reconciliation exceptions are routed to correct operation team and updates are implemented timely
Excellent written and oral communication skills leveraged to interact 1:1 or in group settings with senior client management and internal partners
Partner with North America team on everything including monthly reviews
Oversees and coaches direct report, inclusive of performance management


Knowledge of trading lifecycle across multiple product / asset classes - Some knowledge of financial products and life-cycle is sufficient; experience managing a risk or control team is much more valuable
Flexible and adaptable to change; capable of being a 'change agent' to identify and drive productivity transformation
Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills ("solutions-oriented" mindset)
Client relationship focused (internal and external relationships)
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and with accuracy
Excellent oral and written communication skills

Explains difficult or sensitive information; works to build consensus


5+ years' experience in relevant industry preferred
A College or University degree and relevant proven work experience
Experience with software development either through testing or business analysis
Experience with Investment Management and/or Financial Services; Alternative Asset Management specific
