Duties and Responsibilities
  • Underwrite new life insurance applications, determine underwriting requirements and oversee communication of requirements to brokers. Review requirements received on pending cases and determine appropriate risk classification. Negotiate with reinsurers and management as required.
  • Follow all state and federal regulations according to our compliance procedures including communication of adverse underwriting decisions.
  • Represent Cigna as Medical Director as required for Medical Information Bureau (MIB) membership and act as primary resource for communication, audits and applicable coding in MIB database.
  • Provide medical review with respect to life insurance applications and related documents. Medical review shall consist of reviewing, evaluating and interpreting medical records, including medical histories, attending physician statements, current medical information and tests, EKGs, X-rays and other documentation obtained in connection with the application for life insurance. Based upon the medical review, provide and document risk evaluation and determination, taking into account the current underwriting manual and personal expertise.
  • Provide medical opinion, either in writing or through oral testimony, in litigation or dispute resolutions relating to life insurance applications and claims.
  • Work directly with underwriting vendors including reinsurance and paramedical outlets as needed and maintain a solid level of understanding of the vendor software in order to proactively and accurately respond to customer needs.
  • Act as the primary underwriting contact for issue identification and resolution.
  • Work with the Client Service team in the accurate and timely implementation of new/existing policies that require underwriting.
  • Manage broker relations to minimize strains on the underwriting process (e.g. specify deadlines and information required). Reprioritize workload to quickly address unexpected issues and time sensitive requests.
  • Maintain an understanding and working knowledge of the underwriting system to update and request medical requirements and where to retrieve historical documentation.
  • Look for opportunities to automate processes, implement internal controls and improve documentation. Follow information protection procedures to safeguard client data.
  • Provide expertise and timely decisions in support of the Contestable Claim Committee.


  • Licensed physician
  • 10 years of medical underwriting experience in life insurance industry
  • Working knowledge of windows based computer software applications (MS Office products)
  • General knowledge of Life Insurance
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Customer service orientation
  • Proven multi-tasking ability, organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Sense of urgency to complete work
  • Proven ability to work successfully with others to achieve goals
  • Demonstrated ability to act as an expert resource for less experienced COLI staff
  • Ability to foster collaboration, value others perspectives and gain support and buy-in for organizational proposals
  • Must be a current contractor with Cigna, Express Scripts, or Evernorth. Evernorth is a new business within the Cigna Corporation.
