The English Department at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes applications for a non-tenure stream visiting instructor teaching position. This is a full-time position that does not include summer teaching. This position is open to a PhD student who has completed at least one dissertation chapter and is finishing work on their degree. The main area of teaching will be in the composition program with the possibility but not the guarantee of a lower division course in another area of special interest.

Teaching Load: 2/2 with no committee assignment

Applications should include:

  • Cover letter of no more than one and a half pages addressed to the Chair of the English Department, Gayle Rogers. Be sure to indicate the type of position for which you are applying (Visiting Instructorship). Include a description of your teaching experience, highlighting your experience with and interest in teaching composition and noting other areas of expertise.
  • Current CV and a list of courses taught at Pitt and elsewhere.
  • Teaching Portfolio: It should include sample materials to represent no more than three recently taught courses, one of which may be Writing Center; include syllabi, sample assignments, grade rosters, and teaching evaluations. At least one should be a composition course.
  • Dissertation chapter
  • Letter from your dissertation advisor, indicating that the dissertation will be completed within the year of the Visiting Instructorship.
  • Applicants will be judged on the basis of teaching excellence, experience with curricular supervision and design, and the fit of teaching experience to department needs. The selection committee consists of the four program directors, the four directors of undergraduate studies, the Chair, and the director of the Writing Institute. When this committee evaluates applications, they will do so in the spirit and norms captured by the department's statement on the evaluation of teaching .
