What Your Job Will Be Like

We are looking for a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to assist in a wide variety of duties associated with systems engineering, mechanical component testing, and mechanical design including mechanical development for rapid production.

On any given day, the successful candidate may be called on to:

• Design mechanical components, including:
  • Structure parts and assemblies
  • Aero and structural analysis, loads, bolted interfaces, thermal (radiation), and/or fluids
  • Package existing WR hardware in the next level of assembly
• Test a mechanical component and evaluate against design requirements.
• Write component requirements for system level designs.
• Brief mechanical aspects of the design.

Due to the nature of work, successful candidate must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
• Active DOE Q level security clearance or equivalent with ability to obtain and maintain additional clearances as needed.

Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

• Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
• Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

• Experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • CAD modeling, GD&T, and/or design for manufacturing basics
  • ANSYS or Solidworks modeling tools (particularly FEA analysis)
  • MATLAB or similar engineering-based simulation or programming tools
  • Test planning, documentation, execution, data collection, and reporting
  • Aero and structural analysis, loads, bolted interfaces, thermal (radiation), and/or fluids
  • Environmental testing including flight body qualification, shock and vibration, and combined environments
  • Modular systems and frameworks
  • Additive Manufacturing, qualification, and testing
  • JTA experience
  • System level understanding of RV/RB and air delivered nuclear deterrent systems
• Experience within the ND Advanced and Exploratory (A&E) mission area
• Experience developing and delivering fieldable and/or flight-quality hardware
• Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and sometimes vague requirements
• Demonstrated experience as a successful and effective project leader
• Demonstrated commitment to developing yourself and your skills
• Ability and willingness to travel at least once per quarter as needed (domestically and, occasionally, internationally)
• Active SCI clearance

About Our Team

Organization 231 provides diverse engineering expertise to support high priority, short-turn projects for Sandia's Nuclear Deterrence mission. We partner with other design, testing, and production groups across the Laboratories and Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) to develop designs that meet customer needs and deliver on time. Our organization is flexible and adaptable to address a variety of requests from NNSA and Department of War (DoW) in initiating and executing programs through sound systems engineering principles.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
