Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Process Maintenance & Decontamination Services (PMDS) Team is seeking an Electrical Technician (Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tech 3/4) to join our facility. In this role, you will support mission-critical manufacturing operations in a high-consequence environment, providing hands-on electrical technical support across specialized equipment and systems used in national security applications. This position will be filled at either level 3 or level 4, depending on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications. This is an onsite role in Los Alamos, NM, with potential 24/7 coverage, shift/weekend schedules, and a salary range as follows:
- Electrical Technician 3: $66,100 – $103,600
- Electrical Technician 4: $72,800 – $115,400
Responsibilities for Level 3:
- Perform electrical repair and maintenance on a wide variety of manufacturing equipment (e.g., electro-mechanical systems, analytical instrumentation, gloveboxes, furnaces, radiographic equipment, and high vacuum and pressure systems)
- Provide technical support for fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, and analytical instrumentation activities
- Coordinate with internal customers to complete tasks and ensure availability of assay instruments
- Maintain and track documentation to support compliance requirements and follow established procedures and processes
- Build depth of knowledge in a primary technical area and support multiple functional areas with guidance
- Work in environments involving chemicals and radioactive materials and support national security-related work requiring protection of sensitive information
Additional Responsibilities for Level 4:
- Perform complex electrical repair, maintenance, and advanced troubleshooting across diverse manufacturing systems and specialized equipment
- Provide advanced technical support and guidance in fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, and analytical instrumentation
- Independently coordinate with internal customers and serve as a primary point of contact for resolving technical issues
- Ensure the availability, reliability, and performance of assay instruments and identify and implement improvements as needed
- Lead tasks, projects, or process improvements and mentor or provide guidance to junior staff
- Ensure documentation meets compliance and audit requirements and contribute to improving documentation processes
- Work independently with minimal supervision in high-consequence environments, including those involving chemicals and radioactive materials, demonstrating deep expertise in one or more technical areas
Requirements for Level 3:
- Associate’s degree from an accredited institution
- 3+ years of related experience; equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered
- Demonstrated experience in electrical diagnostics, testing, and troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of industrial, manufacturing, or laboratory equipment
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, drawings, and technical documentation
- Working knowledge of electrical safety practices, including lockout/tagout and NFPA 70E
- Ability to work in a team environment and follow established procedures with limited supervision
Additional Requirements for Level 4:
- Associate’s degree from an accredited institution
- 5+ years of related experience; equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered
- Advanced troubleshooting experience with complex electrical and integrated systems and demonstrated ability to work independently and make decisions on non-routine technical issues
- Experience leading tasks, serving as a technical point of contact, and mentoring other technicians
- Ability to identify, recommend, and implement process or equipment improvements
