Requirements
LICENSE, CERTIFICATIONS, & SKILLS
- NREMT Paramedic certification
- Vermont EMS license eligilbe (NREMT required for a VT license)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Valid AHA or ARC BLS Provider CPR
- Paramedic & Specialty Paramedic - Valid AHA or ARC ACLS
- Paramedic & Specialty Paramedic - Valid PALS or PEPP or EPC or ARC NRP
- Preferred criteria include ITLS or PHTLS certification, ARC Instructor (or eligible), NAEMT Instructor, NEMSMA Basic FTO, etc.
Education:
- Possession of a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- Preferred criteria include: associate, bachelor, or graduate level degree from a regionally accredited post-secondary educational institution.
Length of Service:
- EMT - No experience required. Preferred criteria is 1 or more years of field experience.
- ALS (AEMT, Paramedic, Specialty Paramedic) - Minimum of 1 year of experience as a field EMS provider (EMT, AEMT, and/or paramedic). Preferred criteria include 2 or more years of experience as a field provider at the AEMT or paramedic level
Skills:
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Specifically: Ability to clearly communicate in English.
- Ability to generate patient care reports and use technology for patient care, documentation, and operational tasks.
- Preferred criteria include the ability to use the Microsoft Office or similar software.
- Ability to identify and operate within the incident management system.
- Possession of IS 5, 100, 200, 700, & 800. Preferred criteria include successful completion of ICS 300 and/or ICS 400.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Prospective and existing employees are evaluated on their ability to perform the following tasks:

This screening occurs:
- Upon hire – prior to or within 30 days of the date of hire.
- Upon returning from Leave of Absence or Injury – prior to a return to active ambulance crew duty.
- Every other year employees have this screening performed.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Specialty Paramedic Qualifications:
- Critical Care endorsement requires NREMT NRP and a current / valid IBSC CCP-C, IBSC FP-C, or UMBC CCEMTP certification.
- Community Paramedic requires IBSC CP-C.
Schedule - for safety, we work 12 hour shifts. Full-time is three 12 hour shifts per week and part time is three to five 12 hour shifts per 2-week pay period.
Tobacco, nicotine, & substances:
- We are a tobacco, nicotine, and controlled substance-free workplace.
- The use of tobacco or nicotine containing products, including vape/e-cigarettes, THC containing products, smokeless tobacco, etc. is not allowed on the grounds of the station, in or around BRS vehicles, or while on duty at all.
- Vermont also has presumption laws for infectious disease & lung injury for first responders. Use of tobacco or nicotine containing products excludes first responders (including EMS) from those workers’ compensation or line of duty death benefits.
