Description
The Engine Watch Officer is an in-port watch stander while the ship is alongside in Castine but not connected to shore power. As an officer in the Engine Department, reports to the First Assistant Engineer (1AE) or his / her designee. At a minimum,must possess all USCGCertificates and Licenses, and all STCW endorsements required of a Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited Horsepower - Motor.
- DUTIES
Performs all duties normally associated with a watch-standing Engineer’s position. - Monitor proper operation of the ship's power generation, HVAC, fuel, potable water, and all other systems as instructed by the Chief Engineer, 1st Assistant Engineer, or their designee.
- Evaluate and investigate all Control and Monitoring System (CAMS) alarms, as well as any power management (GEPC) alarms
- While on watch, is responsible for the safety and security of all engineering spaces, including but not limited to Engine rooms, Motor rooms, auxiliary machinery rooms, and electrical spaces (load centers, HV and LV, frequency converter)
- Coordinate with the crew duty officer and cadet watches for response to alarms and/or emergencies.
- Knowledge of and strict adherence to the ship’s Safety Management System is required.
SKILLS
- Thorough knowledge and familiarity with all shipboard systems and equipment.
- Experience as an Engineering Watch Officer.
- Excellent physical health and evidence of a positive mental attitude.
- Ability to work with people in a close, intense environment while providing effective leadership.
- Thorough understanding of automation and controls, fuel transfer procedures, diesel operations, preventive maintenance, and Safety Management Systems.
QUALIFICATIONS (must be valid for duration of the cruise)
- Valid MMC and USCG Third Engineer’s License – Motor unlimited
- Valid STCW endorsements for Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch (OICEW), Survival craft, Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSP)
- Valid USCG Medical Certificate (STCW Expiry)
- Candidates must pass a drug test or provide proof of enrollment in an approved testing program.
- Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, this employee may:
- Be exposed to extremes in weather onboard ship, including rain, sleet, snow, and rough seas
- Regularly sit, walk through narrow passages, and climb multiple flights of stairs
- Use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls
- Reach with arms and hands
- Lift and move up to 40 pounds
- Work in areas of high noise levels
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Must participate in the shipboard USCG drug testing program.
