Position Summary:	The Network Technician (Temporary) provides entry-level support for network infrastructure projects under the guidance of senior network administrators and engineers. This role assists with the installation, configuration, testing, and documentation of network equipment including switches, routers, and wireless access points. The position supports project-based work that contributes to the reliability, security, and performance of the university's network environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:	Network Infrastructure Implementation Support Assist with installation and setup of network hardware including switches, routers, and wireless access points. Support network infrastructure upgrades and project implementations across campus environments. Assist with connecting devices, configuring ports, and supporting basic network configuration tasks as directed by network administrators or engineers. Support hardware deployment activities including equipment staging and installation. Troubleshooting & Operational Support Assist in diagnosing and resolving basic network connectivity issues. Support monitoring of network systems and escalate issues to senior staff when necessary. Respond to service requests related to network connectivity and infrastructure support. Assist with testing and validation of network functionality following system changes or upgrades. Documentation & Project Coordination Document network equipment, configurations, and installation activities. Assist with maintaining network diagrams and technical documentation. Track assigned tasks related to network implementation projects. Collaboration & Learning Work alongside network administrators, engineers, and infrastructure staff to support network initiatives. Follow established IT standards, operational procedures, and security practices. Participate in knowledge sharing and documentation of operational processes. Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:	Formal Education Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Networking, or a related field or an equivalent combination of relevant education, certifications, and experience. Work Experience Experience supporting networking or technology environments through coursework, certifications, internships, labs, or early professional experience. Work Skills (e.g., written and verbal communication skills) Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to follow technical procedures and implementation instructions. Ability to document technical work clearly and maintain accurate records. Ability to work collaboratively with technical teams and follow guidance from senior staff. Strong attention to detail and ability to complete assigned tasks within project timelines. Ability to learn and apply AI and emerging technologies in a responsible and ethical manner, using them to support work, improve processes, and enhance decision making. Specific Job Knowledge (e.g., knowledge of principles and procedures related to field and area) Foundational understanding of networking concepts such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching, and basic network security principles. Familiarity with enterprise networking equipment and wireless infrastructure is helpful. Equipment Knowledge Basic familiarity with networking equipment such as switches, routers, and wireless access points.
Preferred Qualifications:	Formal Education Relevant certifications such as Network+, CCNA (or progress toward certification). Work Experience Two years of hands‑on experience supporting network infrastructure or IT projects Working in Higher Education Specific Job Knowledge (e.g., knowledge of principles and procedures related to field and area) Exposure to VLANs or wireless network deployments Familiarity with basic network monitoring or diagnostic tools General awareness of enterprise or campus IT infrastructure environments
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:	Tools, machinery and equipment used: Desktop and laptop computers Network equipment including switches, routers, and wireless access points Hand tools used for equipment installation and cabling support Network testing and diagnostic tools as assigned Standard office equipment Environmental conditions: (any unusual/adverse conditions such as exposure to chemicals, noise, illumination, air quality, weather exposure etc.). Work is performed in a combination of office environments, technical spaces such as network closets or server rooms, and campus facilities Work may occur indoors and outdoors, including during network installation or maintenance activities between buildings May be exposed to moderate noise, varying lighting, temperature differences, weather conditions, dust, or confined spaces depending on location and project needs Physical requirements: (items such as lifting, pushing, pulling, standing or sitting for extended periods of time, manual dexterity, walking etc.) Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time Ability to walk between campus locations Ability to bend, crouch, or kneel when installing or supporting equipment Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds Manual dexterity sufficient to handle small components, cables, and tools
